Marine Traffic density

I was just looking on Live Ships Map - AIS - Vessel Traffic and Positions - AIS Marine Traffic and found this cool feature which allows you to see the traffic density for a year.

Could be useful to check when passage planning to see what sort of traffic you might encounter

For the east-west Atlantic crossing it does not look like you encounter much shipping once you are west of the line between the Canaries and Cape Verde

Re: Marine Traffic density

I use Navionics for navigation on my phone and tablet. I was thinking when I saw your screenshots here that it would be super cool to have an additional overlay in the Navionics charts to see the traffic. Of course, you could turn this layer on and off depending on if you need it or not ...
anyway, I created an overlay of your map with the Navionics chart in that area. Pretty neat!

Re: Marine Traffic density

Can it be broken down into a monthly heat map? That way you could see when it was historically optimal to transit an area.

I recall having seen that somewhere else, but I have no idea where to find it.

AMVER has a monthly density plot, but the page show the current data is not working properly right now.

Amver.com - Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System - Density Plots

This is August 2012, when I took advantage of AMVER.
