Re: Magnetic North Shift

Senormechanica,
That is a neat looking Dome. I lived in the Dome at South Pole Station in Antarctica for over a year before it was demolished when the new station was completed. I never lost my sense of wonder when I would walk out into the Dome from my room, as over the winter, the Dome became more and more beautiful with icicles hanging down everywhere you looked.

Now I know the above sounds good... But if you believe that, I have some Hurricane free land in south Louisiana to sell you.

Note: all Hurricanes are free for your usage.

I'm interested boasun. Good to read a non-mush-minded post for a change. Like all of mine for example.

I take pictures, date and time stamped, weekly "for the record". The magnetic variation has drifted west about 2 1/2 degrees in my corner of the in the 30 days I've observed it. It is nominally 12 deg 53 min west.
I think you need to check for variations in the amount of metal around your desk or perhaps electrical interference.

I dug out an ancient chart, 1977,for Seattle area, it said 3 minutes per year decrease in variation, now noaa reports 10 minutes per year for this area.

NOAA shows the variation changing 1 minute east per year in the New Jersey area.
NOAA's Geophysical Data Center - Geomagnetic Data

Look at the map in the link below, the pole is moving faster but mostly away from you at hardly any angle, so your change in variation is minimal even with the greater rate.

North Magnetic Pole

This link shows that the pole moves up to 85 km daily, but with it moving 50 km yearly at this point you're still only talking about 1 or 2 minutes of change short term.
Geomagnetism - Daily Movement of the North Magnetic Pole

Basically your measurements of at least 2 orders of magnitude greater than expected on a daily or yearly basis make me suspicious.

Nope.... the real cause is a cunning Chinese Plan for World Domination....
They supply Ann Summers and similar comapnies with low priced products to the Western consumers.... note rising trade discrepancies....
the resultant after darkness buzzing of overworked batteries in Europe and the US creates a negative Polarity that pushes the Pole east toward China...
This will put all satalites non Chinese outa sync forcing us to buy their GPS and learn Chinese as a result..
From there on... its just a matter of time.....

I for one, plan to tread as lightly as I can, but see as much as possible of the still beautiful planet that we live on...

Surely, you mean variation not deviation.

boatman, as usual, you are right arm.....i8s a massive conspiratorial accomplishment of chinese creation. helps give the 2 yr olds putting the gps systems together something GOOD to foul up.....instead of just having the legs fall off the pants as you put leg into them when purchasing from walmart.....
as for the scientifical stuff--we wont know until we get there exactly what is gonna happen. lets have fun!!!!
sounds like a lets go sailing moment....

I dunno about the rest of you... I'm buying our second boat sometime next year, selling everything I own and naming the vessel Armageddon. Just in time for December 21, 2012.....

My nine year old suggested that the reason the Mayan calendar ends next year is that "they ran out of stone wheel".

Glad he's on our boat!

Re: Magnetic North Shift

Doh - Now I'm really embarrassed. See, I need a brush up on the definitions of 'variation' and 'deviation'... I never paid much attention on account of only using the compass to hold a course, after setting the course with the GPS....

Oh....Okay then......
The magnetic poles are different from geographic poles, the surface points marking the axis of Earth's rotation.
Magnetic poles are known to migrate and, occasionally, swap places.
Previous studies have shown that the strength of the Earth's magnetic shield has decreased 10% over the past 150 years.
During the same period, the north magnetic pole wandered about 1,100km (685 miles) into the Arctic, according to the new analysis.
The rate of the magnetic pole's movement has increased in the last century compared with fairly steady movement in the previous four centuries, the Oregon researchers said.
The Oregon team examined the sediment record from several Arctic lakes. Since the sediments record the Earth's magnetic field at the time, scientists used carbon dating to track changes in the magnetic field. They found that the north magnetic field shifted significantly in the last thousand years. It generally migrated between northern Canada and Siberia, but has occasionally moved in other directions.
But this you must realise is all based on theory..... also...

At the present rate, the north magnetic pole could swing out of northern Canada into Siberia.
If that happens, Alaska could lose its northern lights, or auroras, which occur when charged particles streaming away from the Sun collide with gases in the ionosphere, causing them to glow.
The north magnetic pole was first discovered in 1831 and when it was revisited in 1904, explorers found it had moved by 50km (31 miles). For centuries, navigators using compasses had to learn to deal with the difference between magnetic and geographic north. A compass needle points to the north magnetic pole, not the geographic North Pole.
But I still think its down to excessive use of AAA batteries....
