Have you checked the NOAA website? You can download them elecronically and order the paper versions. Places like West Marine sell the paper versions.

Limmer, the NOAA charts in .enc format for the entire west coast are available for free from the US government. But it does mean you need to have useful access to a computer aboard your boat.

You can get some used charts and other stuff at Mariners exchange (used stuff) at Steveston, B.C. Close to your home.

Lancerbye: Where's the Mariner's Exchange in Steveston? There's also Popeye's, but I don't know if they also have charts. A place down in Seattle, near Shilshole, used to have a huge pile of used charts along with a good selection of quality used gear.

Amgine,

Mariners Xchange is in the heart of the Steveston Village at 12220 2nd Ave, phone number 604 271-2284. They have a lot of used marine gear, about twice the size of Popeye's in North Van.

I have a perfectly good Icom radar system in consignment there for cheap if you are interested. Changed from a CRT type to an LCD type for mounting consideration.

Heh. No, my highest priority is actually a replacement hob for the galley, not electronics. But I have a real hard time in a good used gear shop because I can see a bazillion things which would be cool to have at prices I can almost afford... ::has dreams of finding a satcom system for a couple hundred bucks::

Radar is one of those things I know could be useful in our regions, but on a 25' boat and with limited time to focus on the many skills and know
ledgebases involved in being chief cook and bottle washer (and navigator, cheng, deckhand, cargo super, yardboy...) I don't think I have space, budget, or could honestly give it enough attention to improve my safety more than marginally - it may even give me a false sense of security and convince me to head out when I should hang around on the hook for safer conditions.

Nope. I got some b/w chart copies from Armchair Sailor in Seattle a very long time ago. The paper quality was clearly inferior to that used by NOAA after a couple years afloat, thicker softer and showing wear and tear.

Where are you heading? The reason I ask is most of the US charts have been made available in "chart booklet" form, to be printed on a home computer, for example the Pacific Region BookletCharts. If you're just looking for paper backups, this could save you some bucks. You could even get some really good paper 3-hole punched and put them in nice ring binders.

I tired those printed charts years ago and found them very hard to use. Hard to discerne coastline from fathom line etc etc. I would take a 20 year old used chart above that anyday. Maybe they have improved.... For the origianl poster, I need to look, I may still have all my Seattle to Baja charts somewhere, cant remember if I sold them years ago. PS: Once inside Cabo, Charlies Charts and couple general charts are about all you need.
