Looking for Florida Mooring Fields

We are sailing our CS 36 from the Florida east coast to Panama City. Is there a one stop listing of mooring fields in Florida? I know ActiveCaptain has both anchorages and moorings together but it is hard to tell what is what.

If you Google "Florida mooring fields" you'll find a bunch of them, separately listed though.

Your best bet is to check out the Waterway guide or Mark Doyles excellent books "On the water chartGuides". They are both excellent resources and we keep both on board.

The info post above sounds appropriate, though assuming that you've an anchor and rode aboard, does it really matter? Even if you're intending to pick-up moorings the whole way, you will still need, to consider what you'll do if you arrive somewhere to find all the moorings are taken. If your enquiry arises from the lack of suitable ground tackle and/or the knowledge to use it, then for your own safety (and that of the rest of us) I suggest that you perhaps address the shortcoming before setting off.

We have plenty of ground tackle and plan on using it most of the time but I like to have options ahead of time in case we need or choose to use them. Just wanting to travel with as much information as possible. The waterways guide online has helped a lot. Thanks for everyone's input

The mooring fields I am aware of on that route are: dinner key, boot key, key west, fort myers beach, and sarasota.

Plus St. Augustine, Titusville, and Stewart depending on where the OP is on the Florida east coast.

I fail to see the advantage of a mooring field. For the benefit of convenience I assume the risk of unknown equipment that might fail. I guess as a renter I am somewhat protected (assuming the operator is well insured) but dropping a hook just seems safer to me.

I recently researched Mooring Fields for the Florida west coast. Of all the websites the most helpful was, "Sea Grant Florida" the website is;

Good luck on an issue that's been getting a lot of attention lately.

This is a very political issue. For a variety of reasons mooring fields are being pushed on to Florida boaters by the state Fish and Wildlife Commission. They are being fought whenever possible but the tides of change are going the wrong way. Many of the alleged problems were brought about by irresponsible or inconsiderate boaters so try to be a good neighbor wherever you are.

Mooring fields are not the problem, its the city politicians that would like to force us to use them. I personally would like to see more municipal transit docks instead of mooring fields. I stayed at several coming down from Norfolk at $1.00 to $1.50 a foot. It was money well spent about every third night.

This is a good option and will look into it as well. Thanks
