Looking for Canadian Maritimes Chart book

If all goes well, we are heading off from New Bedford to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland in July. Doing most of the nav planning electronically, but would like a chart book if available. MapTech and Richardsons seem to stop at the border. I can always get CHS hydro maps, but the book form is handy.

Anyone have a source/experience with one?

I have not been there yet, but hope to join a boat as crew to see that part of the world, in fact my sea bags are packed for such a voyage. So I have done some reading on the places and environment. Still available for the right boat and crew opportunity.

I have found that there are many guide books but no Richardson-like chart books. Canada Hydrographic seems to hold a monopoly on the charts. No big deal if you cruise a confined area. This makes it very expensive to acquire a set as one would find in a well compiled book. The pile of charts is daunting and the paper is bulky. If anyone knows of a reasonable chart book please share.

I think Steady hit the main one. Perhaps with the number of us headed to the region, maybe there's a way we can produce a good guide book.

There's a FB group called Cruising & Sailing: Maritime Canada. Great resources and our east coast is world-renowned friendly! By the end of your chat I'm sure you'll have 3 invites for dinner and more info on the area than you would've thought possible. Failing that you can try thechandleryonline.com They are in Ottawa, but have online shopping/website and delivery is usually pretty quick. They carry maps etc. binnacle.ca and marineoutfitters.ca are also Canadian and carry chart books etc. etc. Cheers! I'm jealous as I haven't sailed my own east coast yet. Enjoy!

The Yachtshop in Halifax has a good assortment of guides for Atlantic Canada, including Newfoundland and Labrador

I've never seen a chart book. The only really good guide for my money is the Fisheries and Oceans sailing directions. For Newfoundland it's as good as you'll get. There are other sources but be warned that the further north you venture the less accurate your gps will appear.

I'm in Wesleyville on the northeast coast and a good day sail north gets you guessing. Some areas are exceptional while others give me the Willies near shore.

I strongly encourage you to join the PUBLIC FB group "Cruising & Sailing Maritime Canada".
By joining,you can access the FILES at top of group. These FILES contain many useful links & can be updated by any member.

Post your plans & info requests to the group & you will get help from sailors that travel particular areas & their up to date info.

The Group is new this spring but has & is posting very useful info,along with personal experiences. We encourage you & all members to contribute useful comments re your experiences as well-good & bad-for assistance to future cruisers.

Canada has no Maptech type chart books available. The Block Island to Canadian Border book does cover the outer 10 nm or so of Bay of Fundy/Passamaquoddy Bay with NOAA charts 13392,94,96 & charts are considered official Canadian charts as well as US charts. These charts were a US/Can. partnership production.
Beyond that,if you want official Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) charts,you & we have to purchase each individual full chart @ $20 Can. each. Feel free to send an official complaint to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau,Ottawa,Canada.

Various guide books exist,but most are dated. Rocks don't usually move,but don't count on accuracy of buoy,marina,food,fuel & berthage details as these can & do change often. That is the good thing about the FB group mentioned. You can get current info by asking.

No offence meant Peter.

I was trying to make the point that Canadian waters do not have the proliferation of information available that US waters have. Our population & relatively short season results in a much smaller market for those things.
This does not mean Canadian publications are poor quality.

Canadian charts are copywrighted. Which makes it expensive to cruise our home waters. It also makes it cost probitive to make/sell a "chart book" like those that are available in the USA. A real shame, as I'm sure the boat traffic would increase exponentially if the charts were available for free, online, as they are in the USA.

Peter's book is the "defacto" guide for Nova Scotia, no doubt.

I haven't seen PEI in Peter's book though, unless it's covered in one of the newer ones. Peter, why don't you take a sail over here, we'd be pleased to help where we could...
