Longest straight line passage

Some interesting maps. Are you wondering if that is really a straight line? I suppose that depends on how you define "straight line." Considering that our world is round, and far from perfectly round, just what constitutes a "straight line" on its surface could certainly be open for some debate. Nonetheless, I think that if you look at a globe, you will see that the route depicted does constitute what most people would call a "straight line."

Of course, whether or not anyone could actually sail that line is a whole different subject.

The reality is the longest "straight line" passage without landing the average cruiser will EVER experience is either the 1st leg of the 'Milk Run' from the Americas to the Marquesas, or from West Africa to Brazil.

I have been told that the longest passage, without being able to make it shorter, is from
the west coast to Hawaii about 2800 miles

Galapagos to Marquesas is 3,200 nms and is the most used 'longest' route. Took me 21 days and is still the fastest average passage speed I think I've had.

Canaries to Caribbean is 2,400 but mine was over 3,000 as I went south looking for wind

As AussieDude says west Africa to Brazil is long but most cruisers do Cape Verde Islands to Receife, Brazil which is only about 2,400 .... I think that one took us 18 days (but on a different boat than the one I am on now)

We did Thailand to Salalah, Oman in one passage without stoping and even that is only 3,100.

So the marquesas run is the longest any normal person will go... Who wants to sail from Bangladesh to Greenland anyway?

I sailed from Panama to Honolulu 4800 miles but it is not necessary to sail a
direct route. Is a direct route from Galapagos to Marquesas the only way to sail it or is there a way to shorten it? Is there any Islands in between?

Cape Town to Perth in a straight line hovers around 5000 miles..

In 2008 I did Sanfancisco to the Marquasas, solo in a few hours over 23 days. Next time I will stop in to Mexico and smell the roses.
