No, but you'd need it - the RS232 cable will work fine - with an RS2323-USB adapter if your computer doesn't have an RS232 port. And you won't have to mess around gpsgate or that sort of thing either, it'll just work.

Yes, I use a mac aboard (and Linux, and Windows... I'm OS agnostic)

My preference is to use the MacENC software, although I'm casually watching some of the open source projects which are out there. I'm not very skilled with this software, but it has more bells and whistles than I need. It works with ENC and raster charts, integrates with tide software, requests GRIB files from the chart interface, transfers waypoints/routes from/to GPS units, etc.
