Lake Superior to Key West Florida

Im new to sailing but i have a dream to one day sail from Duluth MN to the caribbeans...Id like to hear from someone who has sailed all the way from Lake Superior to the open atlantic ocean taking the route that will allow to do it without taking the mast down..correct me if im wrong, but it looks like you would eventually end up near Nova Scotia, out into the atlantic, then south towards florida...Id like to hear your stories...your vessel, how long it took, what you learned as far as the do's and dont's of such a trip...thank you everybody. Happy Sailing
