As they refuse to come clear with the facts, we can only guess.
Well, check an English Admiralty chart, because it used to be British...

I find it not so interesting because in areas like that I use other means anyway, like eyesight, sonar etc., I never trust any chart around coral, nobody should.

Exactly. When traversing the yellow banks, SE of Nassau, I had my wife on the front of the boat, pointing out ever coral head and steering me around them, whether it looked like there was enough clearance or not.

I'd have been afraid to buff it in the first place for fear of burning through the tissue paper thin hull.

Check out the thru-hull fittings just hanging by the hoses and valves with broken off mushroom heads. The hex nut is on the fitting so no proper seacocks used.

I agree with minaret that this build is not very impressing. The laminate isn't just thin, it also looks weak and resin starved may be?

A Nauticat 52 hull would look the same if it had been bashing in the surf on coral heads for 8 hours.

Most do not realize what fiberglass looks like when pounded on coral heads. Once a mono lays on its side its game over also.
If you need some pictures to nail it home, just let me know.

Re: Lagoon 450 (Next Life) damaged in the Exuma, The Bahamas

A Nautican can get close to 2 inch of thicknes in the bilge turn , i doubt you can break a Nauticat like the lagoon so easy in a reef, lets say a Nauticat can have enough FG to build 2 lagoons together, i believe in a Lagoon the thicknes dance around between 10 and 15 mm, thats it!! no more, dont make sense to beef up a Lagoon , to heavy!!
Build to float and sail, not designed to get a bash in a reef... you dont want a Lagoon for 8 hours in the reef, 30 minutes is enough to destroy it!!

I took more than 3 hours of extreme pounding before the first trickle of water came in. The reef rocks are razor sharp. Just try one step barefoot on them and you will know.

Re: Lagoon 450 (Next Life) damaged in the Exuma, The Bahamas

I think i posted this before, a Light catamaran grounding in a reef can end far away in the midle of the reef due light weight and shallow draft making salvage a epic task , a monohull due draft have a better chance to be close to deep water , i see this before, a FP in Le Marin 300 meters away from deep water in the midle of the reef, waves send the cata to the midle, a monohull can be in their own side resting or at least moving slowy to the midle in the reef... So i guess a Nauticat in the same conditions as Next Life encounter will be floating again, big gas engine pumps can copy with a side holed boat but no way with a Catamaran without hull bottoms... just my opinion.

Re: Lagoon 450 (Next Life) damaged in the Exuma, The Bahamas

How anyone can expect an architect to design a yacht of any material to withstand a solid possibly irretrievable by their 'own power' grounding are simply off with the fairies, you can never compare one incident with another, are all traffic accidents comparable? No they are not there are just too many variables.

Boats are meant to avoid the hard bits, bad luck occurred in this instance and all on board survived, game set and match.
