I don’t think that’s China,
I believe, and this sounds absurd so it’s likely incorrect but that the majority of the Oceans plastic comes from three rivers in SE Asia.

Being preached to by one percenters (this entire crew and our own spoiled child of a Prime minister) who purchase the right to pollute just grates on me a bit. Hey, what the hell I'm human.

Gotta say tho' her writing is superb. She'll get a best seller out of this, probably already sold the movie rights.

I think the truth is that is is spread out much more.
(why can't we use technology to catch the stuff at the river mouth??)

Good news, they’ve now got Interceptors on 3, or maybe even 4, of the top rivers. The amount of plastic and other stuff they catch actually pays for the installation and provides revenue for the local government. This is an environmental organisation that I can get behind - not virtue signalling, but doing hard, pioneering work to solve a concrete problem that is much more imminent than the climate change bs. https://theoceancleanup.com/rivers/

A gross mis-interpreation of a couple of studies which have been conflated. Scientific American seems to be source of the meme.


One study estimates abut 8 million tons of plastic a year entering the oceans.


Another study estimated that 88 to 95 percent of the plastic transported by 1,350 large rivers around the world — referred to by scientists as riverine waste — comes from only 10 rivers, all of which are in Asia and Africa


(Specifically, Yangtze, Yellow, Hai, Pearl, Amur, Mekong, Indus and Ganges Delta in Asia, and the Niger and Nile in Africa - note that the first four are indeed in China and the fifth is on China's norther border)


The study estimated that between 0.41 and 4 million metric tons of plastic waste in oceans derives from rivers. (Note the huge error margin!)



So we are talking aout 90% of somewhere between 5% and 50% of ocean plastic coming from 10 rivers.
