Kiel Canal info

Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone out there has traveled East to West through this Canal?
If so any advice, good places to stay, things that tripped you up, etc, would be most welcomed.

Any good pilots or charts you don't need would also be welcomed / paid for if you wish to sell.

Thanks in advance,
Simon

Re: Kiel Canal info

Hi Simon,

best you can do is starting early and go straight thru to Brunsbüttel lock.
Ca. 10 hours (max.8kn.), if locks work properly. Pay attention for daylight schedule

Re: Kiel Canal info

Went through this past summer. You will not have much time to pay at the Kiel Holtenau Lock. Take € cash with you to the vending machine. Look for an "English" bottom on the lower right corner of the vending machine screen as I remember it. It will probably make life easier for you.

As indicated above there are lots of places to stay. In the middle, we stayed at the Budelsdorf YC in Rendsburg. Side tie, very welcoming and it is an easy walk to groceries and restaurants.

Re: Kiel Canal info

Simon, if you make the trip a short write-up and some photos would be nice for those that follow in your footsteps.

British Keil Services Yacht Club couple of miles E of the Eastern end might accommodate you, but it was 20 years since I sailed out of BKYC so things may have changed. Worth a Goolge.

Odd weather in the Baltic, flat calm in the early mornings, wind builds during the day to F4 - F5 and then dies each evening. Something to do with on-shore winds and europe being a major continent that heats up in the summer months. Found a steady 1/4 knot current in the Baltic in a clockwise direction which was just enough to move the silt away from the wrecks if you touched bottom when diving.

Should be a good trip

Pete

Re: Kiel Canal info

For sure Pete.
I'm going to be blogging my travels so will link back here when I've posted.

Very excited, just trying to get as much info as possible before I go.

I've also heard there's quite a strong tide when you exit to the West that needs to be timed correctly. Will do some research on that closer to the time.

Yes, you´ll get out to River Elbe - but you might wait for the right time in Brunsbüttel Marina beside the lock. But don´t worry, on Elbe River is plenty of space.

Drop me a PM before you start, have a drink together.

Cheers

@Pete7...watched the guys last year March 6th. at Laboe Memorial, they did the Icebreaker Regate.
Lousy cold, wind force 7 from east. Some struggled seroius in front of a bulk carrier. Suppose they were happy to be back at the chimney...
