Key Biscayne to Bimini

I have heard that Marathon has many sailors that start the trip to Bimini from there. Does anyone know if a good number of sailboats leave from Key Biscayne to Bimini (April)?

Windrose,
Probably equal amounts in both points but the advantage in leaving from Marathon is that you can sail on an easterly and ride the Gulf Stream to Bimini. From Miami/Key Biscayne it's a beat under motor. Good luck and safe sailing.

Quite a few boats leave from No-Name Harbor.
Great place to hang out waiting for a weather window and you usually find boats to cross with is you looking for a buddy boat.

We have a 5'4" draft.
My husband told me the Someone mentioned a cut through Cape Romano to Miami; then hit the intercostal? Is it just for Shallow draft boats?

Yep. The stream gives you a decent push from there also, although you are "crabbing" a bit for the first half for sure. The bottom is a light layer of sand over clay. So be careful in a blow.
Not sure about April, getting a bit late for many, but I'm sure there are still boats leaving.

Re: Key Biscayne to Bimini

We just left Snake River (islamorada area) late Thursday, and sailed to Bimini. Headed due east for a while to get into the gulf stream. SOG was a full two knots over boat thru the water speed when we angled north to Bimini. Made for a very fast trip and we got here too early - about two hours before sunup. Anchored up and waited for daybreak.

One other thing. We had a two day window for a sailing crossing, according to Chris Parker. It was still pretty rough RE waves. There is a lot going on with the weather now.

There is no waterway route from Cape Romano to Miami. To the north there is the Okeechobee Waterway from Fort Myers to Stuart which is limited to about 45' vertical clearance and the available draft varies with conditions. To the south you can sail from Cape Romano to Cape Sable and on to the the 65' bridge between Long Key and Lower Matecumbe with a draft of 5' or less, but still far from Miami.

Re: Key Biscayne to Bimini

Windrose did you mean Cape Florida? There is a deep channel just south of Cape Florida that connects the ocean to the ICW.
