jacksonville to Miami

Last year we took our boat from toronto to jacksonville down the erie to the hundson, from the hudson to Norfolk and out Cape fear to jacksonville (19 days), it was a great trip without any trouble or anything breaking......I am 63.5 feet from the water and have a 5 foot draft, although the inland water ways are great, it drives me nuts to hand steer and motor all day at 5 knots dodging crab pots etc.....but I dont want to get in trouble (by my wife), so I have no problem to go on the inside if the outside is to dangerous or uncomfortable,....weather permitting of course

we want to position ourselfs for our first gulf stream crossing in early January for the Bahamas..my question is can I go on the outside down to lets say vero beach?, is it a bash will I feel the gulf stream a few miles from shore??.....when do I start feeling the effects of the gulf stream, how many miles from shore?
any tips would be appreciated as well as weather tips to get me down to Miami...
Thanks
The Navicula

Re: jacksonville to Miami

Regarding the Gulf Stream, just a bit north of Palm Beach it starts trending further offshore so you can easily sail south along the coast and avoid the north current to Jupiter, Ft Pierce area.

If you hug in really close, like 1/2 mile or less off the beach 95% of the time you can avoid the Gulf Stream all the way to Miami. BUT I have been in 2-3 kt currents in 50' of water off the beach in West Palm before so that's not a guarantee.
