Iridium go

Hi has any body had experience with iridium Go?

Also it is very expensive and as I have a iridium sat phone would it not be easier just to buy the much cheaper iridium access point

Also will I need the expensive external antennas as well for offshore sailing

Purely for weather routing

Any ideas and help appreciated

Cheers

Re: Iridium go

the last boat I worked on had one, the unit was mounted in the nav station and hardwired to a helix antenna mounted on deck for better reception. service provider was OCENS. to make a long story short it never worked right for more than a few days. I was on the phone with the OCENS customer service people at least once a week. when it worked it was great, using the OCEANS grib explorer software worked well, but again only when the unit was functioning properly.

Re: Iridium go

Consider a Delorme Inreach. Uses the Iridium network. But since it doesn't keep a constant connection like a satphone or GO, it seems to be much less twitchy about antenna. I just leave mine on the chart table below. It works fine through the fiberglass overhead. Sometimes there's a 30-60 second delay sending a message while it waits for a satelite but nothing remotely like the connection problems of satphones or SSB/Ham.

They have recently released a marine weather forecast service. Certainly not equal to a GRIB but it's only $1 for a forecast on demand.

DeLorme inReach - Two-way satellite text messaging, tracking and SOS anywhere in the world

I also have a friend ashore who I can email with the Inreach who will send me back a weather forecast off the Internet. He just abbreviates the report to fit in one or two 160 character messages.
