Jello Jeffery, the explorer kit is te 5 th edition and is paper version from west marine bought 2 months ago. I compared the area around great sale and grand cay. If you zoom in around little grand cay there is quite a diffence. A really big thanks for creating active captain .. A truly revolutionary idea! Thanks again for all your hard work. Thx cv

My iPhone saved my bacon when all of my boat's hard-wired nav took a dump. I find the Navionics easy to use. Saving up for an iPad

Ahhh...OK, I haven't seen the Explorer paper charts. My impression is the digital data is the best. I agree though that Navionics has gotten better.

I looked around Green Turtle Cay, especially White Sound and the thin channel there. I went through that a few years ago and remember it much more like the Explorer data than the 4' sections that Navionics is showing (we draw 6').

I'm happy to see all of the chart data getting better over time.

I bought iNavx and found it cumbersome and almost useless, the only good feature is the ability to email your position which includes a link to Google Maps. Bought Navionics East Coast and became very satisfied with the IPad 3G as a backup and planning navigation device.

Finistere, could you elaborate? I use the Navionics charts with iNavx now, and I'd like to see what's bothering you compared to the stand alone Navionics charting apps... I feel that way about C&T... Except for Active Captain's overlay :-)

Just a quick quip; I have an old iPhone 3G which definitely has GPS, even without cell reception. Reliable and quick connection, though as previously mentioned sucks the power up.

Using iNavX with the Navionics charts eliminates a lot of the issues of usability with iNavX because the data is quilted together. The thing I think is missing (last time I saw it with Navionics) was the ability to press something quick to go back to where my GPS position is. Every mapping app I've ever seen does this. iNavX decided that it wasn't needed and instead has that annoying "I'll jump back if you don't touch the screen for a few seconds" mode.

Relatively speaking, iNavX as the most expensive nautical navigation app moves to getting even more expensive by adding Navionics charts that must be purchased in addition. Then there's X-Traverse which you have to also purchase in order to get the Navionics charts. It's all a little much for my phone.

I sail in the PNW and it is crucial that any charts I use are detailed and accurate given the currents, rocks etc. I have an Iphone 4 and picked up the Navionics charts for this area. For the money, they are awesome. In fact they look the same as the Canadian Hydro graphic charts. As you zoom in they get more detailed. This little device amazes me more everyday.

You need the 3G version which includes GPS to run navigation programs. USB GPS or any other USB devices do not interface with the iPad.

I did not like iNavX and bought Navionics East Coast for what I needed, fifty dollars down the drain.

I have heard that THIS works: Bad Elf | Bad Elf GPS for iPod touch, iPhone, & iPad. Your mileage may vary... As for the best App, I hear people like the stand alone Navionics ALOT... Hint,hint...

Still waiting to hear what you didn't like about iNavX... And it looks like Bad ELf GPS works...
