I'm having a problem finding the forecast on my new WunderMap.

well i did , took 10 sec.
go to apps icon and just write wunder and wundermap comes up
download and wooops you got it..
i am in Norway and it works even here.

But it only shows wind on land, and only a few places offshore. from ships or plattforms/riggs.

But is free so what more can you demand.

As for the iPhone, I have the 3G version and I can almost guarantee it needs 3G service and will only do a location fix. It can not even tell you which direction you are going.. The rest of the information is great.. Thanks!

The iPhone 3G was replaced by the iPhone 3GS and then by the iPhone 4. If you have one of those original iPhones, you're absolutely right - it has no GPS chip.

Any new iPhone purchased today needs no 3G service to obtain a position fix.

Really usefull thread for those of us about to leap into ipad ownership. How much memory is needed for running the navigation programs along with charts?

I have 40 or so Apps, Charts and Tides, iNavX with every chart from the top of North America to the bottom of South America and a WHOLE lot more... and I've used 15 gig so far... I believe the 64 gig unit I bought is WAY overkill...

I have only about 10gb free on my 64gb, but mine is loaded up with music and videos. I was nice spending a cold evening on board watching episodes of South Park with audio coming through the boats stereo

I don't really need the 64gb as my music collection is already on my iPhone and as it is a pita putting videos on the iPad, my MacBook is a better option for video.

Something I find the iPad invaluable for is manuals. I have loaded up all PDF boat equipment, camera and any other manuals I can find. Makes for easy reference.

There was a similar discussion going on yesterday over on the Tartan listserv. Tom Wells, a local wag, penned this ditty:

In hopes of USB in the iPad 2.

'Twas the night before Christmas,
And down at the yard,
Cold, lonely Tartans
Sat blocked on the hard.
Their water lines filled
With the pink anti-freeze;
Their spars all devoid
Of some sails to catch breeze.
And I with my wish list,
And Ma with her own,
Sat ordering boat stuff
By net or by phone.
When on the T-list
There arose such a clatter,
I quickly logged on

To see what was the matter.
The glow of the monitor
Showed new messages there
About sailing with iPads,
And plugging in, where?
When there appeared,
Quicker than I could speak,
A snow-white Mercedes
Driven by an old geek.
I could see by the logo
On the sleeve of his robes
That he was none other
Than Apple's Steve Jobs.
He sprang to his work
With vigor and glee;
Ripped open an iPad
And installed USB.
And I heard him exclaim
Ere he drove out of sight,
"That'll shut up the sailors -
At least for tonight!"

Merry Christmas,

I'm told the new iPad 2 will have USB. Now on the current model you have to buy the adapter for $29. Here is an aftermarket 3 in 1 adapter for USB, SD card and micro SD card for the same price. 3-in-1 iPad Connection Kit: SD, microSD, and USB | iPad Atlas - CNET Reviews

Wow, this stuff is great! Time for a sim card phone so the iphone has been on my list. Now I'm getting ready for an ipad! My little windoze just got back from another debugging it picked up along the way and that's beginning to anoy me!

Looking forward to hearing how the ssb modem for weather works out.

Any more on using external gps antena (metal boat)?

Any successful users of sailmail yet? Anyway to hitch to a pactor or do away with it altogether??

As far as ones who would pay another .99c for useble pilot charts and a Bowditch included, count me in!

I have found that All WX Pro is a great weather app. It allows you to add your own maps. I spent some time surfing around the NOAH site and basicily built my own app with short term and Long term forecasts maps and texts. I have one set of the north atlantic west and another of the Caribbean. Oh and the US too.

So Santa brought me an iPad... well sort of; he gave me a gift card from Apple. NOW the question bears: Wait until the iPad2 is out or pull the trigger now?

Anyone care to opine?

Given how close the potential new product is (1-2 months), I'd wait.

iPad2

capngeo,

If you do not need the iPad, right, right now. Then just wait a few months for the iPad2. It will have the retinal display which will make viewing easier.

I am waiting also. My older eyes need all the help they can get.

AWWWW.....MAN!

Buy the damn thing now, 2, 3 or 4 months it too long to wait.
You'll want to buy a second anyway, start off with the 16gb 3-g for 600 bucks and it'll be the backup later on.

These things are handy and fun.
