George,
My understanding is that you would have two options, one would be to run the ipad as a second monitor for the PC, which I don't think allows the same speed when trying to plot waypoints and such on the ipad, or you could set up all the boats information such as speed, depth, etc over wifi and have the ipad as an independent chartplotter running navionics or inavx.
This thread has sold me as well! I have to admit though, I may wait and see if they don't introduce a new one Q1 2011.

Detail and accuracy are two different things. Compare Navionics with Explorer and you will find Navionics misses things like whole islands. Explorer is the way to go.

Just a quick note. Ipad 2 is supposed to be available in April 2011.

What will the iPad 2 offer that the current iPad 3G doesn't have?

For starters probably a camera.

How about some faster cellular service?

It'll have camera(s) they call it FaceTime, a retina display (higher resolution), gyroscopes and a usb port, more internal memory (from 256k to 512k for the processor, not storage).

Foxxconn has started production on it from what I hear.

No, those are false rumors, it'll be late Feb or early March before it hits the streets, Steve Jobs has publicly said they are not making a 7" version so if it is smaller it would not be by much.

I just down loaded 2 more apps. They are the navtex app for placing the pad near a ssb to get text weather and the hf fax app for grib files which requires placing the pad next to the ssb. I will try them out in jan and let ya know how they work. Thx cv

WunderMap uses Weather Underground weather forecasting. I also use RadarScope and just plain 'ole NOAA on Safari... Plus HurricaneHD for tracking those big, spinny things...
