The vast majority of that data was probably the videos and music.

I downloaded every Navionics chart for the entire US and Canada and it was less than 1 gig.

The extra space is definitely nice for more music and movies and storing your high-res photos, etc, but isn't needed at all for charts.

Re: iPad

It's my understanding that the $529 for the 64 gig 3g is a typo and it should be $629... $429, $529 and $629, if it's not a typo it's beyond me why they would price the 64 gig at the same price as the 32 gig.

Maybe they are making the same or more from directly selling to consumers then they were with the cost of cards, shipping, distributors, and retailers profits?

Another thing to note is the iPhone store commission of 30%. That means they are only keeping 70% of what they sell them for.

Re: iPad

Yep, the ipad 2's will prob be hard to get reall soon so if you want one buy it now! memory cards have already gone up in price because of the disaster in Japan.

Different places have promo deals, I bought an iPod touch at walmart for $15 cheaper than at the apple store and it came with a $50 iTunes gift card so that's a $65 swing cheaper than at apple. That's pretty significant for a $215 item.

Re: iPad

Just returned from a 2-month cruise in the Bahamas and have to say I loved having my Ipad along. The longer battery life made it possible to watch movies at night without sucking boat power. When going ashore, it was easier to keep dry, easier to carry, less expense to risk and I could get online for hours without needing an outlet. The optional keyboard was very handy for longer texts. For shorter cruises such as chartering, I'm going to leave the lap top behind from now on and just go with the Ipad.

on vacation now with ipad2. Very cool tool but it is frustrating how apple dumbs down everything.
Will not be using a laptop anymore. The charting app with Active Captain is tops!

Anybody know how to delete an unwanted app? Or check remaining memory?

Hold you finger on the app icon for a few seconds until it wiggles, a little black x will appear on the top left corner of the app icon, tap the black x and it will delete it.

To see how much memory you have left click on the settings icon then click on about and it will tell you how much memory you have left.

Re: iPad

Here is the iPad 2 manual in a PDF http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/...user_guide.pdf

also while the icons are wiggling you can arrange them how you want or move them over to a new page so you can have all your nav and weather apps next to each other on one screen, banking stuff on one screen, entertainment apps on one screen etc.

Re: iPad

Not only can you move all similar apps onto one screen, but you can also put them all together in one "folder". For, example, all of my boating apps are under one icon, titled "BOATING". All the fun stuff is in one called "ENTERTAINMENT". This becomes more important as you get more and more apps on your iPad.

Re: iPad for marine Nav

Just returned from 5 week cruise in the Exuma's chain of Islands in the Bahamas with only the iPad with app iNavx for navigating. Loved the ease of use. Had no trouble seeing it on the flybridge.

The iPad will be my chartplotter of choice from now on. Didn't like the Navonics charts. They were not complete in some areas. I heard Jeppensen is coming out with an App which will use C-Map charts which I'm told are based on the explorer maps.

Re: iPad

I just got an IPad2 and it is a very useful device - but I am less excited about using it for standalone navigation than I thought. I have added iNavX, but the best thing just might be that the IPad can act as remote a repeater for Max Sea Time Zero. Is the IPad usable in the cockpit? I am not so sure. The Marine IPad? Well maybe ...

Re: iPad

Tim
I used my iPad for 6 weeks on my flybridge. We have a covered top, but the rest is open. It worked good, not great, but I never had a problem seeing where I was going. I agree with Max Sea. I had it on my last boat and loved it. I also had an bright monitor built in to the console on the fly bridge. I don't know enought about the iPad being used as a remote monitor. Can you use it wireless or do you need a cable?
