IP 65 ok for helm display?

I'm looking for a small monitor to mount at the helm for an OpenCPN nav display. I came across a Roadwater IP65 rated 7" monitor for about $700. I'm curious as to whether or not the IP65 rating is adequate for the job. It appears that it would be fine for all but the most severe conditions. I figure it's about 1/2 the price of an IP67 rated monitor and if it went gunnysack during a severe occurrence I could replace it (and probably other things) and still break even financially. Anyone have any thoughts?

I'd also have an indoor display at the nav station as a backup.

Re: IP 65 ok for helm display?

My gut feeling is that you would probably be fine if you have any protection at the helm. IP 65 means a 1/4"/6.3mm stream at low pressure (4psi/30kPa) for 15 minutes. I could see a chance of higher pressure if you get really slammed by a wave in the cockpit, but for a much shorter duration.

IP 67 gives immersion from 15 cm to 1 m, which is not any higher in terms of pressure, just means it is all over the device at the same time.

I've used both in land-based application but have zero experience with them on the boat, so my opinion is based only on what I know about how things get tested and what I think conditions in a cockpit are usually like.

Re: IP 65 ok for helm display?

Hi Hoppysailor, it's fine for most cruisers, in a semi sheltered cockpit. I have some other options if you're interested. See HERE
Cheers

Re: IP 65 ok for helm display?

Thanks guys. Matt, I'd be interested in seeing a data sheet on the XF800 series.

Ip65 is fine for a helm position. IP 67 ( high pressure jet protection ) would be most suitable , ip 68 is overkill

Re: IP 65 ok for helm display?

I thought I'd loaded that! Sorry. It's currently Chinese New Year (Comes from Hong Kong), so I can't get it until 7 Feb. Sorry. Meantime, here is the link to the Brochure - its for the XF700 (the 7" version) but the specs etc are the same - see HERE
I've sold this model to the NZ water Police, they think it's great...
Cheers

Re: IP 65 ok for helm display?

On another point, used to I could tell by specs how well it might work in sunlight. But with the new screen types, I can't tell anymore. USED TO, 600nits was not sunlight veiwable, although many manufacturers claimed their product was. Sunlight viewable was generally held to be 1600 nits or better. While daylight viewable was 700 or better. Sorry, I'm pulling these figures from memory, and may be off a bit.

Basically, it would be best if you could test one out. The difference in being under a bimini and having the sun directly on the screen is a huge difference.

Or find someone who can give you a detailed enough critique for you to feel real comfortable with.

Or buy from somewhere that will take it back no questions asked.

It looks like a nice monitor. If you get one, I'd be very interested in your feedback. Also, some more detailed feedback about viewability from Dsanduril would be nice.

EDIT: And if course, some input from Matt would be fine, too.

The XF800 is a great monitor. Works fine in direct sunlight, and the picture is surprisingly crisp and clear. Dims well at night as well. If anyone buys one, and was not happy for any reason, I'd take it back for a full credit - less shipping...
I'll chase up that data sheet today... :-)

Looks nice. Temp and voltage ranges are good. Do you know what they mean by 500/1000 NITs? They have 3 different Usage Options: Normal/Daylight/Sunlight. But only 2 NIT levels? Just curious. BTW: 1000 NITs makes it easier to believe that it can be sunlight viewable.

Re: IP 65 ok for helm display?

Hi Dan, not sure where you got the 2 nit levels from. There are 2 options though - Auto or manual. In Manual, there are 10 levels of brightness, up to 1000 NIT. Look under main features in the manual I gave the link to...
It works great in direct sunlight, and at night it can be dimmed to an acceptable level so it does not blind you. I use OpenCPN, and change to night colors as well...
Cheers

OK, cool.

Just so you know, below is where I found the 500/1000.

From the link you gave, I clicked on the right-hand XF800 that says touchscreen option.

That is this link:

Waterproof Touchscreen, LCD Monitor Sunlight Viewable, Touch Screen – Neptune's Gear Ltd

At the bottom of the description it says Brochure HERE. The HERE is the next link:

Brochure PDF ===> http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/020...rochure_en.pdf

In the PDF at the bottom of page 2 in the section titled "Optical specifications" you'll see the 500/1000.

Re: IP 65 ok for helm display?

OK, right. It does not mean 500 or 1000! Remember its Asian, and translated! It is between 500 and 1000 with auto (a lot of settings) or manual (10 settings) in between. But I can see where the confusion came from!!
Cheers
