Re: IP 65 ok for helm display?

Yep, you could. Go ahead if that's what you want.
Consider though it does not do everything a PC can do. Look at OpenCPN - Plotter, Instruments (Incl engine), AIS, Radar (all FREE), then the other PC apps, email, music controller, movies, engine room video, games, etc etc etc.
Not everyone wants a just basic plotter. And when its time to upgrade the plotter you'll have to biff it. The PC software will have been upgraded already, probably for free. Laptops are cheap if you need another....

If that's what you want, yes. But the Garmin won't do my custom Google Earth charts, or the topos. It won't run my Nobeltec or OpenCPN.

However, I do LOVE my Garmins. All 4 of them.

But I want a PC system, too. AND my paper charts and sextant and bearing compass.

So, YOU might be "done with it " with only a garmin, but not me.

EDIT: Matt beat me to it, but I'll leave my post, as well. AND. I'll add, that I would not feel comfortable with only a PC. I like at least 2 standalone plotters. One mounted and one battery. THEN, I am ready for a PC.
