Inland River Charts in RNC Format

Does any have or know where I can download RNC charts for the inland rivers for the eastern US?

I'm considering bring a boat up the Tombigbee waterway the Tenn, to the Ohio to the Kanawha river to Charleston WV.

I want to plot this out on SeaClear to see if it is something I really want to do.

Thanks,
Bill

Good luck. I can't find any for the Mississippi other than the ones for the main channel. Be very careful if you venture outside the main channel on any river and stay away from the downstream side of any island, it is always very shallow for a long way downstream.

Haven't look at these in detail but see if there is anything that will help you. Seaclear will handle just about any format

Chuck,
Thanks for your quick response. Been there done that already. Their Inland is in ENC format and SeaClear won't opem them.

I'm starting to think I'm going to have to find something besides SeaClear and use the ENC Maps. I just wasn't wanting to spend that much of my boat bucks.

I've got a viewer. that helps a little, but I can't plot a course with a viewer.

Thanks for trying.

Convert

You can d/l the river charts from the Army Corps of Engineers site in JPG format. Then you use MapCal to convert them and calibrate them to WCI files. Then they will work in SeaClear.

It is a long slow process. I am now doing the Tennessee River now.

Bill, we ran ENC charts on Seaclear all the time. Just need to set up the directories Seaclear looks in properly. Can't remember just how I had it set up but it does work. Seems I loaded everything in one folder named charts ENC then set Seaclear to look in that folder for charts. Not sure that is exact since it has been awhile. We use Capn now.

Chuck, I will try that. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

If not I'll have to convert it just as Retcoastie said to do.

Thank you both.

Chuck, I've been able to read the RNC Charts with SeaClear without any problems. I can't get SeaClear to open IENC Charts.

Retcoastie, Can you send me a link to where you are dl'ing the jpg's. I couldn't find any JPG's on their site at all.

Thank You,
Bill

Daddy, I just Googled seached for Tennessee River chart and got a listing of the charts. The Tennessee River is in JPG format but the others you want may not be. The Cumberland River is in PDF. I haven't checked the others.
Good luck trying to plot on SeaClear. The rivers twist and turn so much it will be a herculean task, much harder than converting.

OpenCPN is a free program that runs both RNC and ENC charts. I don't have much experience with the program but I was able to download and run the IENC charts for the Black Warrior/Tombigbee portion of the Great Circle this morning.

SoftChart used to produce raster charts for many of the river systems on the Great Circle. You may be able to find used ones for sale or you may find a boater willing to "loan" you their set.

Daddy, check this out.

Cool PDF Reader - View PDF, PDF Viewer

It will convert the PDF files from Army Corps of Engineers to JPG and other image files.
I just downloaded it and it works fine and its totally free. I downloaded the stand alone copy.

I tried the CoolPDFReader and it does work easily and quickly. The con is that the charts came out not in the best focus or very detailed. It was impossible to Zoom in and read anything.
