iNavX Worth It If Getting a Full Blown System Soon?

I'm not sure how much the final cost will be to get set up on iNavX for my iPhone. It seems like you get the basic app, then pay for a bunch of extras. Since I'll be getting a system soon, and this will be just to tide me over for a few weeks or a month, I'm wondering if it is indeed worth it, or if I should just stick to paper for now???

Buy an iPad instead. My iPad carries a full set of manuals do everything on the boat. While many are scanned pages of paper manuals. But one can search for words in the true PDF files, a real plus. It is also good for email and CF, etc.

For a few bucks you can get iNavx, eSeaChart or whatever chart program you want. All are handy backups for a dedicated plotter and paper charts. Finally, loading all you songs onto the iPad means it serves as an entertainment device.

What about the cost of charts though? Thats the costly part of the equation as you can't take them with you if you change app.

That's the part I can't figure out. I just want a full set of world charts that I can use on iPad, iPhone, mac, etc. Can't seem to work this out.

iNavX for our iPad was $50.00 with all of the US charts. We spent another $40.00 and got charts for all of Mexico, Central America and South America. It is good.
We use it all the time, the paper charts stay in the drawer and the Sitex chartplotter doesn't get much attention anymore.

I'm not really interested in getting an iPad. I have an iPhone and a MacBook Pro. I bought an iPad and hated it. I took it back. I need a MacBook Pro and I need my iPhone. I don't NEED an iPad, so if I have to buy one to make use of the product, I'll pass for sure. I'd rather get a good Chartplotter, which will be much easier to use as it's integrated with my Radar, will likely broadcast to my iPhone and should also add value to the boat.

Sounds like you've answered your own question really.

Again though it kind of comes down to charts. If there was an easy way to buy charts and move them between devices it wouldn't be an issue.

I still haven't found a way around this I'm sad to say.
If you get a chart plotter you'll need to buy charts for this.
If you want to use iNavX on your iPhone you'll need to buy the charts again.

Well that's exactly it. If all I have to pay is $50 to get me by sailing around California, then that's cool even for a few weeks use. If I have to pay a bunch more, forget it. I read something about extra for tides and such. Is that correct? Is it $50, $60 or more to get me by?

Practical Sailor did a review of low cost nav apps, I'll look at it again and report back on my findings.

They like iSailGPS for $7.99 which uses NOAA raster charts that are free from NOAA and Transas iSailor which is free but the charts are $4.99 to $50.00.

Put the charts on your mac book. I used a apropos for years great chart plotter. Get a mouse gps 99 bucks and you are set to go. I do love backing it up with my new I pad

Question - if the apps and charts are purchased on the iPhone and later I purchase an iPad, do the apps and charts automatically transfer?

No, they don't. The app will. But the charts you have to buy again between iPhone and iPad.
That's the only issue with this setup from what I can see.

What I'd love to see is a multi device useage.
If you buy the chart it should work on any device you have.
Iphone, Ipad, Mac.

Until then it's too expensive a system to buy into for me.

inavX is a fine app, and here in the USA you can download all the free NOAA maps you might ever need for coastal sailing. The BIG problem is not the software, I have Navionics as well, but with the iPad or iPhone, the display is all but impossible to read in bright sunshine, whereas my Raymarine Chartplotter can be read in all light conditions.
So iPad and iphone nav apps are great for planning out of the sun, but not a lot of use in the cockpit.
