Hurricane Lorenzo to Hit the Azores

If you are there, you should not:

Wave forecast up to 45 ft and winds in excess of 12B. (at Horta)

Terrible. A boat, the Bourbon Rhode, sunk. Only three crew members rescued so far.

60 miles from the eye of a cat 4? No weather forecasts onboard? Crazy

I was wondering the same thing.

I would imagine even a large ocean going tug would do what it could to avoid a Cat 4 hurricane. Must be something I don't know.

The Azores lie about 35 N. Do you not think it shall have de-intensified somewhat by the time it arrives there? Or, are the waters along its track quite warm?

This hurricane is rather unique in still being cat 5 and 600 miles from previous tracks. It's being speculated that it may arrive in Ireland as a tropical depression.

Apparently, they got incapacitated some time earlier.

Actually the opposite holds true - the better wx routing available, the closer they get. It was a powerful ocean class tug, not the tug you meet in harbours managing docking operations.

Have they found anybody else by now?

Colder higher up. But it was very warm where it curved and went to a major event (now acclaimed as the strongest in E Atlantic ever).

Forecast (Sunday night) says it may ease quite a bit. And yet. Have a look at windguru screenshot for Flores. 18m (sic !!!) waves .... ouffffff.

You know Azores harbours' positioning - both Horta and Sao Miguel are exposed should the system pass W of them (which is what is forecast at this moment).

I would be sailing E-ward, and fast, if I were there.

Re: Hurricane Lorenzo to Hit the Azores

Understood, scary thing to have to do. But it is shelter that is paramount, and if the distances are doable, East certainly makes sense.

Those wave heights are horrible for harbours.

Re: Hurricane Lorenzo to Hit the Azores

Looking at wx updates. Flores to get hit bad and Corvo too.

Horta to get hit too. Schools closed flights cancelled. People from homes close to water edge evacuated.

Looking at barometer forecast definitely not the instrument one wants to use for forecasting a system like this - only 9 hours between the pressure going below regular and the hardest blow.

Probably swell is a better forecaster in such a case (?) not sure though.

Here in Canary Islands I watched swell today this sure came all the way from Lorenzo now well over 1000 miles West of us.

Bourbon Rhodes 3 alive crew found, one body retrieved, SAR continues.
