Homemade Chartlets?

I am looking for a good way to chart small anchorages or "gunkholes".
This weekend we rode around the area in question in the dink at dead low tide using a paddle to sound with. This worked ok as our cruisers draft is only 2' but it is tough to do this exactly at low tide and doesn't actually record a position. For situational awareness it was worth it but I would like to generate a chart (paper or electronic) with real soundings corrected to MLLW.
I have thought about using a handheld GPS and leadline, recording time depth and waypoint# on a clipboard. Is there a better way?

Thanks for your imput

Carl

Try it using a handheld depth sounder. You can buy one for about a hundred bucks.

Some of the newer GPS units support uploading track and waypoint data to a computer. I understand that you can then import this data to Google Earth as a GPX file. That would allow you to locate depth info on the Google Earth image, and you could sketch in depth contours using their "Track" function.

Haven't tried it myself, but when my new Garmin GPSMAP 60Csx arrives, I'm going to give it a try!
