Helm Station Equipment Explained

Hello all
I have been looking for some tutorials or explanation on sailing helm stations with zero results. Would someone mind creating a video or picture tutorial explaining a nav helm station, or maybe a link to some.

Thxz in advance

Hope I'm not asking for something to difficult to do

Re: Helm Station Equipment Explained

A little more detail would help, like what size & type of boat, cruising grounds and an amount of money one is willing to invest.

Most helm stations are set up to ones own taste/needs, as with mine, I have hydraulic steering so hyd. gauges are present & mixed in with the bunch.

Re: Helm Station Equipment Explained

My helm station is the end of the tiller, what else is there??? Have my sailing instruments (autopilot controller, knotmeter, windpoint and depth) on a pod over the sea hood above the companionway. The Garmin 3206 plotter lives on a ram mount in the companionway that I can swing out when I have an inerest in what it says. The magnetic compass is bulkhead mounted next to the companionway.

Thank for your replies

I guess what I need to know is what is the basic helm station equipment first. Sorry I do not have a boat yet but I am interested in learning.

Power or sail?

Although I would venture to say the most basic helm equipment is a compass

Helm station. Sounds like more of a powerboat thing than a sailboat thing. Something you'd find on the third deck of a mega-yacht?

Re: Helm Station Equipment Explained

Have you looked at wheel and its environs on some of these new boats??? They've got so much crap in front of the helmsman it's doubtful that they can see forward. Of course that seems to be the idea as so many of these guys spend all their watch staring at the instruments and prescious looking at what's going on around them on the water.
