Harmonic Wizard Needed

Hello Forum members, let me 1st introduce myself.
I am Terry from the UK and have come across this forum several times looking for answers to my ever more confusing tide prediction problems.

I suppose it gets to a point when one must ask for help.

My problem is this.

I am a Linux user and have currently written a script for use with David's excellent Xtide program.
All seems to be great apart from I am missing several reference stations that I require.
Those familiar with the software, I have used tcd-utils to restore_db and can see the harmonic data in plain text.
However, I require to enter data that is another format to the one which xtide uses.

The data I have found from an old wxtide harmonics file looks like the following.

I have no idea how to start converting this into data that can be read by xtide, which has data like the following. I have tried for hours but always get errors building the database again

Have you e-mailed Dave to see if he has any suggestions? AT the very least, he has the source code to xtide on his site that can show you how the tcds are evaluated.

Re: Harmonic Wizard Needed

Thanks for the reply.
I had already Emailed David as could not find the developer of wxtide's Email address.

As far as I can work out, Wxtide now uses the same data as xtide.
The dev must of updated his harmonics files at some point.

I would love to know how this is done.

Anyone on here understand the data?

Re: Harmonic Wizard Needed

I think I understand the data...
The data is mostly a list of harmonic components, amplitude (in units as given in the header, here feet or meters) and phase angle in °. The topmost number in the header is the local time difference from UTC, then the shift from hydrographic zero with unit The component names are the classical component names in the field: eg Lambda 2 is written LAMBDA (2) in one set, LDA2 in the other set.
x refers to missing (i.e. irrelevant or unknown) components.

Converting depends on what the program requires:
Translating component names and header.data format and supplying the x's where components are unavailable...

BTW A rather comprehensive european set for opencpn is available here
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzWF...bEU/edit?pli=1

Your Brest data is from an old (and well known) data set from the '80s that used to be freely available. It is not very accurate in some cases. Many hydrographic services (UK, France ...) have since then clamped down on free availabily of such data, for financial but also security reasons (Are you competent enough to make use of such data ???)

Thanks for the info.

I wonder if opencpn can export to the data type that is used by both XTIDE and WXTIDE?

I require the tide data for BREST as to work out the tides for other locations using offsets.
The fact that the UK has used public tax payers money to gather the data and then privatised it is a joke!

What would be the best way for me to go about getting the data into WXTIDE or XTIDE?
Surely someone has a UK harmonics tcd file for use with XTIDE??

Any ideas?

Thanks

I wouldn't know where to start mate.
I've just been taking the harmonic data from V8 and putting it in my XTIDE tcd file.

A lot of the sub stations are an hour out, so haing to manually sort through them

Re: Harmonic Wizard Needed

Can anyone help me further please.
I have the Harmonic Constants for another port but am very confused how to get them converted into the data that is used in Harmonic_v8

Here is the freely available data

Code:
Port	Date span	Days	Z0	O1 K1 M2 S2
 	 	 	 	H	g	H	g	H	g	H	g
Cobh	1906–1907 365 2.255 0.034 45.80 0.021 155.50 1.381 149.60 0.433 194.20

Re: Harmonic Wizard Needed

It looks like a quizz, but I fear it is done in earnest.
May I strongly advise you to quit inputting data you don't understand, for your own safety (I just cannot imagine you would peddle your results around)

BTW here is the answer to your question.
Using only 4 components when 24 are available and used in the package I have been involved in checking is asking for trouble...

And how can an UK sailor ignore the equation Cobh = Cork ?

Hi, Thanks for your reply.
I didn't understand the data and thats what brings me here, to try and understand how it all works and get some expert advice.
I find it all very interesting and has become a personal hobby.
I didn't come here for a geography lesson on Ireland either
Some of the locations I am interested in use Cobh or (Cork) as a reference station. Namely,
Portland
Bridgport
Lyme Regis
Exmouth
Teignmouth
Torquay
Dartmouth
Salcombe
Devonport
EastLooe
Fowey
Falmouth Penzance

I am NOT a Sailor, I am more interested in Low tide than High tide and WILL NOT use the data for navigational purposes.
I am only interested in the UK and Ireland.

Cheers
