This is the book I learned from and can add my recommendation. Self taught on a passage and I actually got to where I was trying to go. I have also read a lot of recommendations for Kittredge.

Re: Handbook of Celestial Navigation?

Slight thread drift. Saw on the news this weekend that the US Navy has resumed teaching celestial navigation at the academy. Worried about the GPS jammers that are getting more common.

...brought me twice around...(third time around the sextant was just used to keep it up just-in case---pity about it...)

Re: Handbook of Celestial Navigation?

I prefer the Mary Blewitt book as books go. This is a really good course from Vanderbilt University here in the US for visual learners. https://my.vanderbilt.edu/astronav/overview/

Re: Handbook of Celestial Navigation?

I am nearing the end of my celestial navigation course taught through Victoria Sailing School, out of all places, Denver Colorado.
It has been fantastic! It is an online course that you can take live or recorded.
The instructor, Jim Cook, is really great and helpful.
It is 9 -3 hour lessons and then, final exams . I took a coastal navigation course first and then celestial.
It means so much to learn the theory and Jim makes it easy.
I like to take the class that has been recorded, so that then I can do it on my own schedule.
I also enjoyed "Celestial Navigation In A Nutshell" and "Simple Celestial " by Chis Kreitlein for books.
I also wanted to say that I really enjoy the original poster of this thread!👍
