Hand held marine GPS

Hello,

I am looking to purchase a marine hand held GPS. I am in panama heading to french Polynesia. already tried two Garmin which i didn't like.

Can anyone advise me what hand held should i buy or if one knows about any non expensive normal and good chartploter I will appreciate it as well.

i use the garmin 72 - the cheapest one they make. actually i have three cheap handhelds, bought used for less than $50 each. all are battery powered.

i would think that, crossing the pacific, you don't need gps 24/7, maybe just a half dozen or less 'fixes' each day. a couple of batteries might last the entire crossing.

I have a old Magellan handheld & it is very hard on batteries, bought a cigarette lighter type charger for it & was much happier with it then. The charger also has a cable that'll plug into a computer.
