GX2150 hookup to opencpn

Trying to get my GX2150 to send and receive GPS and AIS signals to OpenCPN. AIS targets not showing on OpenCPN chart.

I am using a USB Breakout Cable from Milltech. But I don't know what the
wires do.

Here are my current connections.

Cable GX2150

yellow-----gray nmea dsc output +
orange-----blue nmea gps input +
black------green nmea gps input -

If some one has hooked this up I would appreciate knowing what wires go where.

Thanks

Re: GX2150 hookup to opencpn

Hi, I have this working. The DSC and AIS and GPS all work.
If your GPS is talking at 38400 on the BLUE wire, you will have AIS and DSC on same GREY wire.
If your GPS is talking at 4800 on the BLUE, you will need to connect the GREY and the BROWN wires.
You will in any case need a 2 channel NMEA(RS232-ish)to USB converter/s, or two converters.

The wiring is shown in the attachment

Re: GX2150 hookup to opencpn

Thanks for your help.

I assume you are not using the USB Breakout Cable from Milltech product # FTDI chip USB-RS232-WE-1800-BT_0.0.

The hook up I used was from directions from Milltech support for Costal Explorer charting software which it appears does not work for OpenCPN.

However, AIS targets relative to my boat position are appearing on the GX2150 screen but not on OpenCPN charts.

So GPS information is getting from my computer to the GX2150.

I guess I need a different hook up but so far I can't figure out out which wires are connected where.

Re: GX2150 hookup to opencpn

Hi.
No I am not using the milltech thing.

My GPS is a Garmin GPS 16X, programmed to speak at 38400 baud, and also programmed for reduced sentences, to avoid clutter.

The Gps talks to the GX2150 and OpenCPN by splitting the signal one to two.
Ie the output of the GPS is Parallel to the GX2150 and an ATEN Serial to USB adapter.

The Grey wire out of the GX2150 talks to OpenCPN via a second ATEN Adapter.

Both adapters are fed into a USB hub. They are on Com13 and Com14. OpenCPN is configured to listen on Com13 and Com14. AIS, DSC and GPS are therefore on the Laptop screen under OpenCPN.

I have a third ATEN adapter that is on Com12 that goes to the Autopilot, and OpenCPN send route and waypoint arrival sentences to the A/P via that.

Com 13 Also doubles up as my Pactor connection via a RS232 Switch box.

Are you sure you have OpenCPN configured correctly? I would have to "see" your hookup to understand it and help you more.

Hope this helps, email me if you need more info, I can't check here regularly.

Re: GX2150 hookup to opencpn

I finally got the wiring thing figured out!!!. I will post my hookup in a separate post so those who might be having problems can find my solution in a search.

Thanks to all for your help.
