Great lakes forecast

Greetings Lakers!
I am curious who has the most accurate wind forecast in the region, hoping to get a little kite session in here on Mackinac island...

Re: Great lakes forecast

This time of year the wind is just plain flukey. In addition, the weather has been cooler than usual with east winds more common than is usual for this time of year.

Go to the island. Whatever wind direction kicks up - find the best spot and let'r fly!

Windfinder but the Great Lakes are a bit tricky as far as winds go.

Ain't that the truth. I've had both extremes on Ontario, totally opposite from forecasts, even up to the current ones. Was pretty sure that if there HAD been 0 knots of wind, I shouldn't have been surfing West at 7-8 knots? And the total opposite, the forecast winds that disappear as soon as I leave the dock. Anyone that finds any accurate ones, will be a hero to me.

Re: Great lakes forecast

I use the standard CCG continual marine weather broadcast, as well as Passage Weather. I especially like PW for planning. Both are ok for major systems. The problem is that local and regional variations are often the dominant weather characteristic on the Great Lakes.

Basically, you have to be prepared for everything [emoji6]

Re: Great lakes forecast

I spent many years boating with my father on Lake Erie. Our experience was no one could forecast. We could go from dead calm to green water breaking over the flybridge of an Egg Harbor 37 in minutes.

All that shallow water doesn't help.
