Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Rick...
- I don't see your report in flyspray about this problem.
- Exact steps to reproduce, please
- Use the official plugin, not your compiles, please
- If it is not related directly to GE2KAP, let's not spoil it's thread, please

Thanks

Pavel

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

GE2KAP.V17.0.1.9

is now available. It provides the ge2kap plugin that supports OpenCPN V4.1. There are now two plugins ge2kap_V15_pi.dll which supports OpenCPN before V4.1 and ge2kap_V16_pi.dll for OpenCPN 4.1 and above. The proper one will be installed when you install the new version of GE2KAP.

This version also allows you to put Google Earth on a second display. BUT for some reason it will not work if the screen resolution is 1920 X 1080. Use 1366 X 768 instead which will give a 16:9 display.

Get the new version from my website: Sample or by pressing "Check for Updates" on the 3rd panel of an older version.

Hi Paul,

I am using O V4 and evaluating V4.1 Beta

where should I install this version?
The default C:\GE2KAP, the V4 plugins and/or the default V4.1 plugins???

Are there going to be conflicts?

Spiv,

Yes you should install Ge2Kap under C:\ge2kap directory.

If you are running both O 4.0 and 4.1 then You should install the version of the Ge2kap plugin that supports each version in the \opencpn\plugins for each O version, I am assuming they have separate directories.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

I now have a simpler way to fix the GE API so GE2KAP and the OpenCPN GE plugin will work with the newer versions of GE.

You can download it by clicking on this link:

http://gdayii.ca/Downloads/Fix_GE_API.zip

Then unzip to some folder like C:\FIX_GE_API the unzip password is: phiggins

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

GE2KAP.V17.0.1.11 has now been uploaded to my website. Download it with this link:
http://gdayii.ca/Downloads/GE2KAP.V17.0.1.11.exe

It fixes a problem caused because Google added a new layer called Voyager. This prevented GE2KAP recognizing what language GE was using.

Also because it is very difficult to find a good download of SasPlanet I have uploaded it to my website too:

http://gdayii.ca/Downloads/SAS.Planet.zip

the unzip password is: phiggins

Using GE2KAP and SasPlanet allows you create charts from Bing and Navionics. Sometimes Bing is more accurate than Google earth.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Paul,
GE2KAP has been a real blessing while cruising in Indonesia and SE Asia where the commercial charts are often off by kilometers. One problem I ran into was the newest version of GE2KAP doesn't generate the right kap files if a screen saver or screen turn off occurs. No error is generated, but the last good screen keeps being used until one touches a key a gets the screen back. Simple cure is to go into the Windows settings under "power" and set screen turn off to "never" when on AC power.

I have posted online all my GE kap charts for Indonesia. They have been helpful to us and I hope others can benefit by downloading and using them as well. The web page is www.villa-g.com - Google Earth KAP files to use with OpenCPN and Fugawi

hbrown01

Thanks for that information. I will update the Help to add a warning about preventing the display from turning off while creating multiple charts.

GE2KAP.V17.0.1.11 with win 10, sony lap top, ge force nvidea video chip

BUT for some reason it will not work if the screen resolution is 1920 X 1080. Use 1366 X 768, and all works ok.

Many thanks to phiggins for your app as am merging soundings I have made on the river Severn in the UK. into GE so to display on open cpn.

Soundings are available here, through Google fusion tables

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Thanks for the feedback. Yes unfortunately with those higher resolutions, windows sometimes doesn't provide me with the correct resolution, 1366x768 usually fixes it.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

We've switched to Mac's onboard. Has anyone gotten GE2KAP working with an overlay while running OpenCPN on the Mac? We have GE2KAP and GE working in Parallels, but to do an overlay, we have to run OpenCPN in windoze under parallels. When I run it with OpenCPN in Mac and tell it to create a chart it says it can't find an OpenCPN window.

I read Jackonanthems post earlier in the thread and it seemed that he got OpenCPN in Mac talking to the GE2KAP, so I'm confused.

I'd like to be able to get rid of the complete windoze OpenCPN that keep running only for the purpose of creating overlay charts.

Thanks for any help.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Ok I don't have a Mac but I assume that Paralles is some sort of virtual machine. So if you have GE2KAP running in there you will also need OpeNCPN there too if you want to overlay it on GE. But not sure what windoze is or why you need it to run OpenCPN under it in Parallels. If OpenCPN is not in the same virtual machine GE2KAP won't find its window.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Thanks Paul. Sorry for the shorthand/habit. Windoze=Windows 8.1 in this case. Yes, Parallels is a virtual machine. I run Parallels 10.1.4 in which I run GE2KAP and also GE. To do overlays from OpenCPN (O), I have to run O in the same virtual machine and all works ok. I was hoping to be able to eliminate the dual installation of O, (windows and mac) and just use the mac version. All I use the windows version of O for is to make charts then I transfer them to the make charts directory.

I thought it would have to be that way until I read this post from jackonanthem earlier in this thread. He seems to say that he has O talking to GE2KAP while running O in OS X.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP
Lots of cruisers use Macs so thought someone might be interested in a report on using GE2KAP with OpenCPN on a MacBook. Just got it running. It was a bit fussy to set up, but Paul was a great help and it seems to work well now.

The system is: MacBook running OS X 10.10.3, OpenCPN 4.0.0, Parallels 10.2.1 with Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1, Google Earth Pro 7.1.2.2041 and GE2KAP V17.0.1.2. GPS input is from a USB connected Globalsat BU-353.

As GE2KAP is written for Windows it must run on that and GE must also be installed on the Windows side. OpenCPN is on the Mac side as is the GPS input.

GE2KAP wouldn’t load the rexx interface with GE, so had to go to GE Pro, then, when starting GE2KAP continue to have message that “Typing Delay is Low” and if a typing test is performed it fails. If selecting “No” for typing test everything works OK. GE2KAP automatically starts GE Pro. As stated, nearly every installation had some fussy bits including the driver for the GPS, but just a little perseverance paid off. Don’t forget to set up GE as instructed (e.g. tools>options>3D View>Elevation Exaggeration: .01).

Haven’t found a way to save GE maps directly to the Mac, so they’re put on the Windows desktop from whence I drag and drop all the .KAP files for OpenCPN to find. Voila!

Jack
