Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

OOPS, Found an error in V10.0.6, the tile feature failed.

Corrected and uploaded new test version. So anyone who got V10.0.6 should download the new version..

you can find it here:

www.gdayii.ca/Downloads then click on GE2KAP.V10.0.6.1.exe . Use this whole link, you won't find it by going to the Downloads page on my website.

Question Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Thanks for creating GE2KAP, it's really great.

I have encountered a bug in recent versions. I have used 10.0.4, 10.0.5 and now I am using the latest version, 10.0.6.1.

Whenever I use it to create KAP on high resolutions, the resulting KAP files fall in the same position. In OpenCPN, I see several red boxes, but only 1 picture is visible. This happens for several other software in which can read KAP files. So I think there is a problem with generated KAP files for high resolutions.

I have tested this for several resolutions, and I found that this happens for scales higher than 1:4000. Lower than that, everything is just fine. Is it because of some rounding procedure in scales?

I can provide samples if needed, but this bug is easliy reproducible. Just create 4 tiles with scales higher than 1:4000.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Well it works for me, see the attachment which is 4 tiled charts of marina Hemingway in Cuba. Each chart has a scale of 1:3342.

Sometimes its hard to see the charts on OpenCPN. What I recommend is that you first turn tiling off (F9), then put the cursor in the outline of one of the charts, then right click and select "Max Detail Here". That will show one chart then turn tiling on and you should see all of them by zooming out.

If that doesn't work for you send me the 4 charts. My email is in the Help

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

I just reread your post. You do realize that I depend on the navigation program to quilt the tiles together, right? I don't try to stitch the tiles together, the navigation program does that when you turn on quilting.

Thanks, turning on quliting fixed the issue, and I can see all of the 4 KAP files at once.
But the same issue remains with other GIS software, for example QGIS that uses GDAL as the underlying library to read KAP. When working with low-res KAP files, opening 4 tiles as raster layers works just fine and they are tiled near each other, but when I use high-res KAP files as I described before, all of them overlap and I can see only one of them.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

I purposely overlap the tiled charts to be sure that the navigation program quilts them properly without any space between them. OpenCPN does this well. I have not tried it on other programs. Maybe you should contact QGIS and ask them why the charts don't quilt when another navigation program (OpenCPN) does it.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

prop,

When you say "But the same issue remains with other GIS software,". What other software other than QGIS has this problem?

I installed QGIS and can see the problem. I modified GE2KAP to eliminate the overlap when tiling and got the same results. I noticed the problem does happen with charts of smaller scale like 1:21000 but there it displays only 3 of the tiles when there is 4 in the set.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Did some more investigation on QGIS. The problem is that when it loads a chart with a large scale, it loads the wrong coordinates. The latitude is way off and the longitude is not quite correct but close. See the attached screenshots. OpenCPN shows the coordinates for the circle in the middle of the chart to be lat=23.086220 lon= -82.503230 but QGIS says that its at lat=-0.00369 lon=-81.99397.

This chart loads fine on OpenCPN and OziExpoler, SeaClear and Fugawi so it has to a problem with QGIS not the chart produced by GE2KAP .

I did some searches for problems with QGIS or GDAL getting wrong coordinates with BSB /KAP and found a lot of similar hits but nothing exactly like this problem.

Again prop I suggest you open a problem with QGIS.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Rainy day so did a PowerPoint show in creating a KAP Overlay.

Based on the 10.0.6.1 version but easily changed when the next 'real' one comes out.

Download from http://www.mediafire.com/?aehualt4mid30sv

OOPS! Didn't look close enough to see that 10.0.6.1 is the REAL one

Will make the appropriate changes later.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

GE2KAP.V10.0.6.2

Occasionally some users run into a problem installing Open Object Rexx program they get this message:

Unable to read the current value of PATH .. You will need to set the PATH environment variable manually.

This means they have to add the path to the oorexx program to the PATH environment variable of windows.

I have updated the GE2KAP Help file Problems section to include instructions how to do this. Also modified GE2KAP.exe so that if it finds oorexx not installed, it will give the user the opportunity to open the Help file so they can read the problems section.

So I uploaded the new version to my website with the changes described above. Nothing else was changed. You can get the new version at:

www.gdayii.ca then go to the Downloads page and click on GE2KAP.V10.0.6.2.exe

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP Suggestions

Hi Paul,

When upgrading from one version to a newer one it is necessary to reset the typing delay, ChartLocation\Name and GE Delay settings that were changed in the older version.

Is it possible to have these 'configuration' settings carried over to the newer version? (As in OpenCPN)

Also, the Uninstall program leaves the old program folder on the C:/ drive with a Charts folder and 5 other files that must be removed manually or with a cleaning/uninstall program. Can this be fixed?

Thanks.
