Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Hi Paul,
GE2KAP runs well with netbook already. However still not with lower resolutions than 1152x768.
Regards,
Hasan

Hasan,

After it fails with a smaller screen resoution, send me the GE2KAP.log (its in same directory as GE2KAP.rex, it may look like a text file) and a screenshot of the OpenCPN window.

Also tell me what resolution you were using.

Send to: phiggins()gmn-usa.com (replace the () with you know what).

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

GE2KAP.V9.4.18

I just uploaded a new version of GE2KAP that fixes the problem with smaller resolutions.

It also allows you to run without using Google earth so it won't start GE on startup. If you have the the "Create Kap from Overlay. Do not use Google Earth" checked it won't use GE.

There is a problem using GE2KAP with the Beta versions of OpenCPN V3.1... I am looking into the problem. The current version of OpenCPN V3.02 does work.

My website is looking better but still needs work.

You can download the latest verion of GE2KAP at:

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Using GE2KAP.V9.4.18 with OpenCPN 3.1 Beta version

OpenCPN 3.1 has changed the 'Chart Selection Bar' from a separate window to drawing it on the main window.

I have looked into the problem and found a solution:

First For some reason when you install V3.1 the font is very small for the Sataus Bar at the bottom so you have to set the font to a larger size. So open the toolbox, click the User Interface tab then select StatusBar in the Text element. Next click Choose Font... and set the font to: Veranda, Regular, Size:10. Then Click OK.

Next, still in the User Interface, click the "Toolbar and Window Style" and select either Journeyman or Journeyman Flat. Then Click OK.

It will tell you you that you must restart OpenCPN so exit and restart OpenCPN.

Next with GE2KAP not running, delete the cmparray.arr file in the same directory as GE2KAP.

Now start GE2KAP enter a location/name for the chart select opencpn in the overlay field then click Create Chart. Go throught the OCR recognition process.

The only problem is the 'Chart Selection Bar' will appear in the resulting chart. Don't have a sloution for that yet but will think about it.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Paul..

Just did a conversion from a commercial map and GE using GE2KAP v. 9.4.18
from OCPN v. 3.0.2 and everything is working perfectly.

I hope the new OCPN version coming out next week will have corrected the OCR
reading as well as the color problems. The OCR Žlearning curveŽused in GE2KAP is
unable to read the characters which have become completely blurred for some reason.
Also the colors in the converted map is totally missing.

Guess weŽll have to keep using the old v. 3.0.2 until this is fixed...

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Hello,

Thanks for this nice program

One small question: If I want to have the georeference data stored in the kap file (wpx, wpy and such), I have to use mapCal on the generated kap file?

maitai...
The generated kap is already georeferenced. If you want to add more georef points (I don't know what you mean by wpx and wpy as it does not exist in BSB terminology I'm familiar with), you can simply edit the chart header in any decent text editor and run bsbfix (part of libbsb) on it.
What we know about the header structure is summarized at https://github.com/ngacharts/ngachar...r-and-bsb-file

The polynomials are a part of BSB 3, while we used BSB 2 in the NGA project.
To get a handle on this read GPS-Marcos posts in this thread New Zealand Charts

To sum it up, normally polynomials are not required (for OpenCPN) as they do not increase the accuracy of the georeferencing. To use the NOAA re-projection tool, the polynomials must be present, however. Other programs, like PolarView, needs the polynomials as they are doing "on the fly" re-projections of Transverse Mercator and Polyconical charts to Mercator charts.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Yes, the thing is that bsbLib cannot decode without that. NOAA rasters are coming with this data, so I didn't realize it might be missing and be legal nonetheless.

In qtVlm we are using bsbLib to decode kaps... for the time being.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

GE2KAP doesn't currently generate the polynomials. If there was a demand for it, I may look into it.

Cagney..

Have a look at this on-line conversion facility. Squeezes every bit of info from a file.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Just a tip to those who have not followed the latest posts re changes in OpenCPN affecting chart conversions with GE2KAP. Aparently the OCPN versions after 3.0.2 use new elements of wx. 2.8.12 not used in earlier versions, which are causing these anomalies and we just have to readjust accordingly.

1. Make sure you have initiated Clear type in the Win control panel.
2. In OpenCPN tools/user interface make sure you are using Veranda font size 12 BOLD for the Status bar,and also set the Journeyman as your Toolbar style.

For the time being, the Chart selection toolbar will be included in your .kap conversion,
hopefully this will be changed in a later OCPN version. It is possible of course to edit the overlay map as well,f.ex. give the buttons the same color as the background.
You can also use tools to increase the brightness of the toolbar to match the background.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Tore,

Thanks for the update.

Other users may find they either have to turn off Clear Type or make other adjustments to the font type, bold/regular, and size to make the OCR work. For instance I had Veranda, Bold 10 and Clear Type on running fine in OpenCPN 3.1.802 but when I dropped back to V3.0.2 it no longer worked with they settings. I had to turn Clear Type off.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Re my #647 about the Chart selection button bar.
Jesper has very kindly agreed to include a hotkey Ctrl B as an on/off switch for the Chart selection buttons so they will not show up in the converted .kap charts.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

GE2KAP.V9.4.21

I have just uploaded a new version of GE2KAP that fixes the problem with OpenCPN version 3.1.814 (or higher). It will now issue a CTRL+B to turn off the Chart Selection bar before taking a snapshot of the chart.

Note: DO not issue a CTRL+B yourself, the Chart Selection bar must be visible when you run GE2KAP. It will issue the CTRL+B before and after taking a snapshot of the chart.

Also, note if you upgrade to OpenCPN V3.1.814 (or higher), GE2KAP may fail positioning the cursor the first time you run it. You can fix this be terminating OpenCPN and restarting it. Not sure why this is happening yet.

The new version is on my website: www.gdayii.ca in the Downloads
