Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

I have created some charts then I get this :

ERROR: NOSTRING occurred at line:9513
Content of line:
self~logmsg('GetDib cursor_box_start=' cursor_box_start' cursor_box_end='cursor_box_end)

Guess something have changed in opencpn when reading the position. But what ?

Someone know what to do ?

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP .... how to

I have updated my 'how to' at http://yachtvalhalla.net/navigation/...geoverlays.htm regarding transparent overlays.

Due to press of time making preparations for a passage I have used the pre-release GE2KAP 9.3.13 (Sorry Paul .. hope this doesn't mess you up)
I have not mentioned the other good things coming with GE2KAP, only that dealing with making the overlays.

Terry..

Why do you want to use the slider to just provide a compromise between the CM93 and the GE maps. By leaving the slider all the way to the right you will acheive the best of both worlds,GE showing only the land areas and CM93 showing only the sea areas without the need of any diffusion.

You can also, during the first calibration page, use the GE ´History´slider to find a better, earlier map, perhaps without obscuring clouds etc. Keep the slider all the way to the right before continuing. At the first GE map editing page you can brighten the map which is often rather dark.

I think you have missed my purpose. I don't want just both the GE image and the chart image separately displayed. What's on the land really isn't of a great interest. My purpose is to have an overlay with semi-transparency that allows me to see reefs and such visible on GE but not on the displayed chart. That's why I call them 'overlays'.

So it's what you call 'diffusion' that I'm after.

Also, I find most of the folks visiting my website aren't interested in doing a lot of 'fiddling' with the images ... they are more interested in the 'quick and easy'. The additional editing now in GE2KAP is for the more sophisticated folks like yourself.

I've updated the page regarding the purpose and a download link for a Word document version of the page.

Terry..

OK,I hear what you say..but I can´t imagine there can be a lot of reefs and obstructions shown in GE which is NOT also visible in the opencpn chart.
Most of the GE views are pretty dim and obscure, making them also diffuse gives you a hard time viewing them in the cockpit at night. Pays you to spend a little time preparing the charts to a readable level. Just my pennies worth.

I imagine you must have good cm93 coverage in the area you sail

I am not so fortunate in SE Asia where only minimal coverage from cm93 needs to be supplemented.

Here's an example of a popular anchorage in Puerto Princessa, Palawan, Philippines. The cm93 display has been corrected with offsets in the appropriate cell. The overlay shows the reefs that many boats have hit while making their way to the Abanico Yacht Club.

And many other locations are just as poorly charted. Hence my time spent creating semi-transparent overlays for a large number of locations in the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Micronesia.

Terry..

Of course,I understand, very useful in really remote areas,I agree.
But for most people, living in areas with regular traffic, that will not be neccessary.
Not fair to set a default based on remote area conditions, but it is good to know the possibilities when you do.

As you also know, the prudent mariner makes use of ALL information in order to establish his location triangle.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Not to put you off but after the NGA fiasco what in effect you are doing is redistributing Cmap 93 chart data and Google Earth images expect 2 knocks at the door. Do what you like but keep it personal and private.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Maybe maybe not. cm93 is a vector based charting system. Nothing of the kind will be made or shared. What we do is mixing information roto m different sources putting them together and exchange them between us. This is not any form of redistribution of copies.

I do not think it's illegal to use the GE2KAP either.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

NEW VERSION GE2KAP.V9.4.0
Just uploaded the new version that has the following 3 enhancements:

1. You can now invoke an image editor at various points in the creation of a chart. You should be able to use your favorite image editor such as GIMP or Photoplus or even MSPaint . The default editor is the View editor that comes with GE2KAP. You can use the editor to add things like text, or lines or to enhance the images. You must NOT resize, skew, or rotate the image.

2. You can now create KMZ output with a calibrated image rather than a .kap chart. The output can be used with OpenCPN KMLOverlay plugin.

3. If you use the opencpn option to overlay a CM93 chart onto GE and need to adjust the overlay to match the GE image, GE2KAP will tell you the X/Y offsets to use to correct the CM93 chart. You can input these offsets into the OpenCPN CM93 Offset Dialog.

Also, I just uploaded a new version of C2GPXKML that supports converting MaxSea tracks and routes to other formats, like GPX and KML. It does NOT support converting other formats to Maxsea format.

You can find these new versions at www.gdayii.ca
