Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Paul,

I am using GE2KAP to calibrate from a 256 color png and a chartcal.dir created in mapcal.

It works fine except GE2KAP changes the colors. Attached are crops from the gif and tif that GE2KAP stored in tempGEKAP:

gif - looks exactly like my original png

tif - colors are fubar

I assume this is because it is reducing the number of colors when it makes the gif to tif conversion. Is there a way to control this?

Thanks in advance,

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Surveyor,

The best way I found is to use nconvert utility to first reduce the colors and size. Try this command:

nconvert -out png -resize 40% 40% -colors 64 26001.png

you can get nconvert here:

NConvert Software - Free graphic and photo batch converter

I have to reduce the colors to 127 or the tif2bsb program doesn't work.

Probably won't be able to help much more for awhile as we are heading across the Gulfstream in the morning to that magic island where the Internet is scarce but the girls are beautiful, so you you don't miss it too much.

Paul- Happy sailing. Let us know when you figure out the Google Earth issue as I only have the most recent 6.2 version of GE and cannot get GE2KAP to work.

Thanks- Matt

Paul,
I use nconvert. My standard usage is -colors 127. Old habit.

After noticing that the output from GE2KAP was weird I redid my nconvert using -colors 256 and ran through GE2KAP again with the same results.

Its Ge2kap that is changing the colors when it converts from gif to tif. The examples above are from the tempGEKAP directory after creating the chart.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Regarding the problem with V6.2:

I don't hold out much hope this will be fixed. The problem is GE announced sometime ago they would no longer support the COM API which I use. This is the first version where something does not work.

Others have found a copy of V6.1 to drop back to. If anyone has a link for V6.1, please post it.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

You can get 5.0.1 and 6.1 here:

Download Google Earth

The 6.1 file is an update so I think you have to start with the 5.0.1

Thanks Surveyor, I'll have to get back to you about your problem in a few weeks once we get to Mexico where I should have Internet.

Here is another link for GE 6.1

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Hi-

Can someone please give me a hand? Sometimes I can get GE2KAP working, but most times it returns an error "Error: Calibration Failed! Error: Unable to find Google Earth window."

It seems that the GE window is being called back to the front, but GE2Kap can't find it. The really odd thing is that sometimes it works if I just click "Create chart" after receiving the error- but not always. It's the random nature of the error that is really driving me nuts.

I'm running the most recent version of ooRex, the most recent download of GE2Kap, and GE 6.1.0.5001. System is Win7 64-bit.

Here's pertinent portion of the logfile (let me know if you need more):

Try setting a delay using the slider at the bottom of the ge2kap window.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Jim- Thanks. I did try that and the delay slider has no effect. The delay seems to set a wait period once the window comes forward to allow GE to load all the image. With my issue the GE window is simply not coming forward- so I think the delay is not even coming into play.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

The Help file says "GE2KAP will start and also, if not started already, Google Earth will start."

Perhaps starting GE first?

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Terry- GE starts up just fine when GE2Kap comes up. It's when you hit "Create chart" that there is an issue. In fact it seems to interact with GE just fine in the early part of the process, as I can see the GE window become active and the image straightens to point north. It's later in the procesing where it "loses the connection" with GE.

Here's another odd data point: It seems (on my system) GE2Kap works better when creating multiple charts based on GE polygons defind as a KML file. I was able to create 300 charts with the error only coming up 5-6 times during the process. However, almost every time I try and create a SINGLE chart just based on the GE screen, it will fail.
