i successfully made a KAP file from google earth using the ge2kap program. I loaded the KAP file to openCPN and it wouldn't show anything.. does enybody have an idea why?
than'x alot,
Ami.
Make sure you select the FOLDER containing the new KAP chart (not the chart itself)
With the 'Show chart outline' option enabled, did you get the red outline ?

I have an new function for GE2KAP that needs some testers.
New Function: It allows you to overlay the chart that is displayed on OpenCPN onto GE and create a chart (or just create a chart from the OpenCPN window).
Prior to this feature if you wanted to do this you had to put two waypoints in the UL and LR corners on the opencpn chart, take a snap shot of the screen , crop the snapshot to the waypoints and then overlay the cropped image with GE2KAP. With the new function its done automatically.
Anyone want to test it? If so send me an emai|:

I dont know if you have seen the Navionics app for the iPad It will overlay the charts to GE Bing or Terrain It seems to do this on the fly Would be nice to implement this in OpenCpn or a version of GE2Kap The only problem is that offshore with no internet GE view is missing Perhaps Nohal would be interested Seems GE for iPad does not use an offline cache

From your pic, it seems that only land is overlaid. Using Paul's (Phiggins) GE2KAP, one can view the seabed, a most useful feature when it comes to anchoring...Having the aerial views from Bing as an alternative would be nice, though
Hi
I try to use GE2KAP to produce transparent chart for opencpn
Unfortunately I get an error and the process stops
I use Vista , GE 6.1 , GE2KAP 8.09 , ooRexx 4.1 and opencpn 2.5
I set GE as requested
Every things OK until the transparency selection window is shown.
After that , once the transparency is set , GE2KAP try to access to the 16th position in the "Edit" menu in French "Afficher le profil d'élévation" in English something like "Display elevation profile" , but this part of the menu is de-activated so I get an error and the process stops .
You can see in the shots attached :
kap1 : GE2KAP try to access to a no active menu
kap2 : The error I get
In the log : the sequence leading to the access and the end of the process
I Tried GE2KAP on my small net book 10' screen and XP :
I get the Identify Character window , but the characters to be identified are unreadable .
I tried to identify the characters as I though they were ,but systematically I got an error
You can see on the shots the unreadable characters and the error
I attached also the corresponding log file and error file
I bet you its an Asus computer right? You and Valhalla should get together and buy a good computer like an Acer.
Anyway, first try changing to Decimal Degrees so you don't have to enter the direction (NEWS) then when you are entering the characters don't be concerned about anything before the ":" (colon). If you can't read it just press enter, I only care about the characters from the : onward.
Contact me directly aout any future probems:

I am using an Asus EeePC and it's unreadable. Tried it on a Samsung and it's nice and clear.
With the EeePC ff you look at the bottom of the OpenCPN screen, the characters the program is trying to learn are visible there where you can read them.
