Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP
New Version of GE2KAP V6.0.6
I just uploaded a new version of GE2KAP that supports creating charts from images created by scanning a paper chart and then calibrating it with MapCal_2. GE2KAP will create the chart from the entry in the CHARCAL.DIR created by MapCal for the image.
This includes NGA charts that the OpenCPN group has downloaded into:
NGA Charts Upload Files at OpenCPN.info (English)
The details on how to do this can be found in the README.TXT
You can download the new version at:

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP
I downloaded a 17 MB NGA chart but I could not use it in any program which all froze up.
I have 2GM memory on my Vista so I don't understand why.
I also tried to compress the jpg but it also froze up.

Paul..
No it was a .jpg from the Peru coast.
I will try a smaller NGA chart later.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP
Paul..
I don't know why but someone keep removing my postings here. The system problem on my laptop IS relevant here as I am trying to access the mentioned NGA charts mentioned in this thread. Please refrain from removing my postings until the problem is solved.
I now have a downloaded propsys.dll file which I am trying to replace with the existing one in the System32 directory but I am unable to do so because my system asks for administrator permission?. I AM the administrator and changing user I again log in as system administrator but I still can not gain access and keep getting requested for administrator permission. Anybody PLEASE?

I've now wrestled with the problem on three different machines (two Linux, one Windows 7). Three different processors. Three different combinations of RAM and virtual memory (but all in the range of 2 gigs each. Lots of different graphics programs (nconvert, xnview, gimp, windows office picture manager, others...).
They all seem to be right on the edge of crashing while handling the .jpg's of the NGA charts.
The newest, fastest machine with Windows 7 works best (dual core processor, 2 gigs of RAM, 2 gigs of virtual memory). But it's crashing out on some of the biggest files. Frustrated.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP
Tia Bu,
Did you try increase your virtual memory to 4 gig?

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP
Just uploaded GE2KAP.V6.0.9 that fixes a few bugs (not putting in all calibration and borders points) and adds an enhancement that allows you to create multiple charts from images by putting in generic image name like *.png to create charts for all the png images or *.* to create charts for all the images in the image directory. If you use this, just put the chart directory in the chart name field.
New version is at www.gdayii.ca ... Downloads

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP
Here is what the GE2KAP window would look like to create charts for all the pngs in the Images_NGA directory. The charts would be created in the C:\Charts\ directory.
The charts names created are from the CHARTCAL information field which was entered when the chart was calibrated with MAPCAL_2.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP
The latest update is a true winner! Thanks for continuing to update this thoroughbred of a program. It is so much easier to use than anything else out there.
I have a request though. (whiney crybaby )
How hard would it be to have the kap name default to the same name as the overlay file? I pick c:\nga\region2\24447.png for the overlay and GE2KAP defaults the output to c:\nga\region2\24447.kap. Maybe it can be a radio button option.
Yes, I am that lazy!
If not, this is still a frickin awesome program!
EDIT: I just read the above posts, I was behind the times. Copying my pngs and doing a batch kap convert and then moving the kaps to their directories is going to be a pain. Maybe I should just abandon the individual directories for each chart thing.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP
Surveyor (aka: whiney crybaby )
Right now, if you just specify the directory for the charts eg: c:\Charts\ and put in the image name eg: c:\Images\22402.png, the chart name will be the name that is defined in the CHARTCAL.DIR when you calibrated it with MapCAL. So if the chart was named Tobago in CHARTCAL, then the chart produced would be c:\Charts\Tobago.kap
Also, if you specify the chartname in MAPCAL with a directory name, eg: \GE2KAP_CHARTS\Tobago, it will try to put the chart in that directory under the chart directory. So in this example it would create a chart c:\Charts\GE2KAP_Charts\Tobago.kap. The only stipulation is the directory must already exist. Does this work for you or do you want me to create the directory if it doesn't exist?
If there is no entry in MAPCAL it will look for calibration data in a image_name.gpx or image_name.txt (see the README for the format that must be in) and create a chart the same name as the image name with a kap filetype.
Oh, and thanks for the compliments.
