Do they sell the plug to connect it to the 12V so I don't have to wire everything? Just for playing at home

Your talking about taking it out of the boat after it's been installed? They do for Aviation GPS's, see no reason why they wouldn't for a boat, but worst case just but the power cable it comes with. If I remember correctly mine requires three cables, one for the RADAR, one for the Xducer, and the other is for power. It's been awhile so not sure. I am sure you can go to Garmin's web site and it will list all available options for the 740 though

Its not a big deal to wire, you will have to hook it up the same way on the boat. Black to (-) red to (+). Done. Any 12 volt battery will do. Lawn tractor, car, boat.......

See page 6 in the installation manual. http://static.garmincdn.com/pumac/GP...es_INST_EN.pdf

It will power up then.

Re: Garmin 740 Questions

Thanks guys! Got the unit today. Was wondering if the g2 vision maps are worth it for sail boats?

She actually ordered the 545 not the 540...guessing the 545 is better?

Re: Garmin 740 Questions

G2 are neat, add a lot of detail, photos of marinas etc. More neat to have than essential. If you want one, buy it from a Canadian on Ebay that sell real Garmin cards a a fraction of the normal price.
A real Garmin card will look fake, it's a micro SD card put in a SD card adapter and doesn't say Garmin or anything like that on it.
If your going to buy from Garmin, buy it as a download, then you can re-download it after you lose the original

Re: Garmin 740 Questions

Yea I saw they will show you the best route, but figure that's not that beneficial on a sailboat relying on wind and such

We purchased all gulf ad caribbean and bahamas G2 cards online thru amazon got everyone for under $35. Each. And love them. The aerial photos are awesome. The route planning is ok as a guide but we do not use it. There are many areas that can and do shoal or fill in and we have found some huge differences in. Depths from the map to real.life.

You got G2 Vision cards for $35? Got a link, I've paid way more than that, $35 is a deal!

Dumb question maybe, but if you get the cards off amazon, can you still update them?

Yes, well sort of via Garmin on line. I have the 555s version. The numbers for Europe and the US are always slightly different but underneath its the same basic Ford.

The problem I had was the Vision 2 card (499mb) that I bought separately from the Garmin was too small for the updated chart (526mb) bought on line from Garmin. So I needed to buy a new 2Gb SD card (anyone one will do), but the 555 operating software had to be updated first to recognise 2Gc cards, using the new SD card. Then format the SD card and stick it in to download a XML file so the on line system knows you have a Garmin and are not counter fitting etc. Then you can download the updated chart and finally install it in the Garmin. Needless to say the manual doesn't tell you to do this or the web site and it took weeks of back and forth to the boat to finally get it sorted with Garmin's tech help.

So this is what the SD card should look like once the XML file from the Garmin unit and the downloaded files from on line with the new Vision chart.

The small Garmins will show tracks and if connected to AIS your future course and that of the courses of any other AIS targets which are on a collision course as well as firing off the alarm showing impending your impending doom if you don't do something.

Pic of the SD card files with the updated Vision 2 chart on:

Re: Garmin 740 Questions

Wow they are expensive for the area they cover. Guess maybe it's good to get for your home area. At least the 545 came with the preloaded maps for US coast, I'm guessing I can at least update those.

I can't find the vision cards on amazon for under $100
