Question Garmin 4010 - Good Value?

I am going to the abacos this winter.
I think that I want this garmin because it has 3D underwater sonar?
Is this true and if so is it worth the money so i dont hit anything?
If not is 3d sonar existant or are all sounders in a 2d line like the original mario brothers game.

We took 7 1/2ft through the Bahamas last Spring; #1 Eyeball is more important than the depth finder.

With all due respect. If you are alone are you wanting to stare at a plotter? Or would it be better to have some one competent on the bow looking for coral heads. You need to go slow, plan carefully and keep a good DR or have a reliable plotter... which are not all that expensive these days.

Look UP and not at those damn screens. My plotter is below decks and I hardly look at it. I use a small hand held in the cockpit and use autopilot so I am not behind the helm where many put those huge instrument pods with plotters and so forth.

Sailing is becoming a video game it seems.

any plotter is only as good as the maps that are programmed into it. Coral grows and sand moves around so it might be a good plan to look where you are going.

Having said that, I have the Garmin 4210 which is the same as the 4010 but with all the charts for North America and the Bahamas already loaded into it. Absolutely great plotter. Best I have ever seen.
