Re: Free Routing Software

Jesper/maitai..

How about also creating a route optimizer based on tidal streams, which, after all is a lot more predictable than the winds? And certainly very important for the motoring sailor.

The attached example, created from a suggestion of Thomas,is based on the grib file system and fits right into OCPN without any problems.

I have set up a POI giving direct access to daily grib predictions of tidal streams from the English Channel,German and North Sea plus the Baltic, which is a good beginning.
I believe the provider is soon going over to grib2,so bear that in mind.

I think qtVlm would be the perfect vehicle for this tidal stream prediction feature, creating the optimal route based on boat speed (perhaps also wind) and the optimal starting time, also with course/speed at set intervals along the route.

Re: Free Routing Software

Interesting and useful planning tool...copy & paste from one to the other, creating an optimized route. I hope tidal stream correction will follow soon.

Re: Free Routing Software

I also would like to see tidal stream calculation included.

@maitai
qtvlm crashes when you delete a route where the compass was set on.

i think this should be managed by the software

so far i like qtvlm very much

Re: Free Routing Software

maitai..

Occasionally, the optimized route gets too close to land.
Could you provide a way to have a user input clearance limit
before the Routing is performed?

How can I set up a .bat file or similar to start qtVlm and go direct to
the Route edit/Route details?

No way. Either it crosses or not. Computing distance too land would be very very costly. Depth is another, eventually easier, story

Re: Free Routing Software

maitai..

I am also helping the developers of the Android navigation app ´OruxMaps´ and I am happy to say the optimized route also work in this program.

Could you please also include the boat heading and speed in the .kml export version as shown in the route details as this is needed for OruxMaps.

See attached screendumps of a route from the Irish Sea and the summary of the trip.

Greets:

Trying to build a clean version of qtVLM on linux ubuntu, but the code base seems to lack and install function. Tested it manually and then with debian packaging tools. Both give me the same error. So was wondering, since it builds cleanly, how to install this puppy as its missing the basic map background if compiled on linux.

Re: Free Routing Software

Yes there is no install target rule in the makefile. I'll see if we can do something about that.

As said in the other topic for the time being the best is to take the files from the windows zip.

Re: Free Routing Software

Copying over the needed files results in the initial splash screen hanging. Duplicated it twice on two fresh compiles with newly downloaded sources.

Best regards

Re: Free Routing Software

No go, just hangs on the initial splash screen and goes into an endless loop resulting in a memory lockup.

Re: Free Routing Software

Hmmm I don't know what is wrong, it should work.

Please delete qtVlm.ini, poi.dat and boatAcc.dat that are in the qtVlm directory and restart

Hello, it seems really interesting. Just one question : from where did you get th currents grib file ?

Thanks in advance

Done..same result. The source tree is rather odd as it has v_3 burried in branches. Placed the requisite files in v_3 which is the build directory and it hangs. Placing the files at the top level in base_dir and its starts fine but cant find the map files.

All for now, its late (were in a different time zone) and have to go to work tomorrow. Will pick it up again later.

Regards
