Free Marine Map

This looks like a great resource to bookmark.

Here is a screen short of where I am going tonight, to give you an idea of the quality

Looks nice.. I personally think the NOAA online viewer is better... (as I know it is using the source data...)

I tried the flytomap viewer on Ensenada, Mexico ... and was disappointed in the lack of any details, streets running through the bay... missing islands in the bay... So I would NOT call this a worldwide marine viewer.....

Also.. I did not see any legend or explanation as to what units the depths are... I suspect they are in meters, as that is what I calculate when I compare a San Diego Sounding (using NOAA online viewer) and the same area using flytomap. This (for me) is a very important detail.... Should be clearly specified... (I may have missed it, if so please inform me.. )

And for the US, on the web, I would prefer NOAA over a third party (even if the third party isusing NOAA information.....)

Regardless, thanks for the new info tip... I am sure they shall get better over time...

Re: Free Marine Map

Looked very interesting but seems to work some places and not others. US waters I got charts and detail but in the Bahamas only vague blobs in the approximate location of most islands (even the big ones) and no depths or other navigation detail of any kind.

What part of the world was your screen shot?

Re: Free Marine Map

Yeah, seems to have nice detail in the places where you can get free NOAA charts with that detail and more, and really sketchy details in places wherever free charts aren't already available.

The Mediterranean. The detail around here looks reasonable, but you can get proper Navionics maps for the whole of Europe for only $70.

Re: Free Marine Map

Good for USA. Absolutely useless for the Bahamas. I think most folks that have been to the Bahamas could sketch better charts than what`s shown on this site. very disappointing.

Re: Free Marine Map

I use the Marine GeoGarage which freely displays official raster maps from several international Hydrographic Offices (US, NZ, Brazil, Argentina, Bahamas, Germany, Netherlands) and with some monthly subscription ($9.9) charts for UK, Australia, Canada, France, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Croatia, Iceland, South Africa with the Google Maps viewer.
By the way, the charts are regularly updated on their servers.

Re: Free Marine Map

First off, thanks for contributing and I don't mean to just crap all over your link like some armchair admiral.

Disclaimer aside, check out the differences there regarding that road. One of them looks like a bridge, and the satellite image shows it accurately.

I hope the drivers are holding their breath on that road
The detail is obviously very poor in some areas, but in others it is quite good.

Technology gives us lots of information and I like to compare 3-4 map sources where possible for shallower spots/ anchorages. Disturbingly in the more remote spots its not unusual or them all to be wrong.

Re: Free Marine Map

In the area where I sail most often (south Brittany), the site doesn't show drying areas, which are very wide. So, it isn't easy to recognize the lay of the ground from the picture.

I use it, too. Great resource...

I had a look at Marine Geogarage and like it, thanks CaptnPete. I have registered there and will play around with it. I guess those are true readings as with any map when you input or create a route and one needs to add/ subtract for magnetic?
