fishing for a dream, 2 questions

the west coast of US sounds wild and inhospitable, is the only way to get to Alaska from SoCal to go first to Hawaii? and is the other way - Alaska to SoCal easier or safer? I would love to hear some first hand stories, I watch Cruising LeaLea every chance I get. Don't have a boat yet but - you know how it is.

Hi Ceawolf,

You don't have to go to Hawaii to get to Alaska from SoCal but sailing north up the west coast can be a tough trip. The predominant winds and current are north to south so it is usually an uphill trip to Alaska and least the first part of the trip. I understand summer conditions up the inside passage are generally calm and you end up motoring that part of the trip.
The water is always bluer on the other side of the ocean.

I have not come back up the coast north. But some I talked with said the same as coming up Baja; leave very early am, motorsail fast and when the wind and swell pick up, find refuge.
There are many summer days from Oregon north where it's like a lake, but don't count on it.
The iNside passage is a motor trip mainly.
I guess from what I just said it's all a motor trip! unless you tack out to Hawaii!
