Fedora 17 and GPS

I have installed gpsd and client and try to connect dongle BU353. When I run xgps I can see 8-9 satelites. In the line at the bottom of the page it says /dev/tty/USB0. So I guess that is where I should find it also in Opencpn.

But I have tried /dev/ttyUSB0 to five, Networkgps and others. But I get no NMEA-signals.
I even turned off SELinux and made sure I belong to group Dialout.

I bought the BU353 dongle today after spending many hours to get my bluetooth GPS working. Somehow I had it up and running for a few minutes but I was unable to repeat it.

It shouldn't be so difficult. Just follow instructions and it should work

As you are running gpsd, you have to use it as the datasource in OpenCPN as well. Select "Network LIBGPS" as the datasurce. More on that in Setting Up GPS | Official OpenCPN Homepage

It should be quite straightforward but..

Yesterday I bought a new USB GPS dongle and reinstalled Opencpn just to be on the safe side. "Network LIBGPS" is no longer an option in the list. "Network GPS" is.

I can run xgps and see a lot of satelites. I have tried connecting by using "Network LIBGPS", "Network GPS" and various /dev/USB's.

I have carefully read the "Setting Up GPS" And many other pages on the net. In the end it is like reading a Windows manual - I understand the worlds but not the meaning.

Can you give me a hint on the next step to take?

With GPSD running, it makes no sense to try the /dev/USBs as they are already taken by gpsd, the only option that should work is "Network LIBGPS"
Publish your logfile so that we can have a look.

Where can I find the log file?

It's called opencpn.log and is located in your home directory. You can click on the help icon in the toolbar to get the exact location.
It will probably be too big for this forum, so compress it and add .doc extension to the resulting archive to be able to attach it to your post.

Hi,

Looks like you don't have gpsd-libs installed. It's required if you want to use libgps. You probably have gpsd installed but not gpsd-libs. Can you test it, execute this and report the result:

rpm -q gpsd-libs

If it says "Package gpsd-libs is not installed" Can you try to install that package:

yum install gpsd-libs

Then libgps should work in OpenCPN

Very strange. In your logs, you have:


17:30:22 CEST: Failed to load libgps.so

Now, what's the output of:

ps aux | grep gps

According to your logs, you had succesfull connection to your GPS using



/dev/rfcomm0

And then a few succeded with libgps but without anything received from libgps. There may be some mixup there. Are you sure libgps is receiving data from your gps right now?

How do I test if it is lipgps receiving data?. Only way of testing data is to run xgps.
