Unfortunately,OpenCPN does not as yet accept the new .grb2 format.

Thanks a lot Tore. Grib files is great. Never thought of that. I love OpenCPN and use it alot, but for grib files I find Zygrib bether. Also open source. Recommend it. It also support the New grib format.

Re: Electronic Tidal Stream Charts for Scotland?

amadeus..

I have used zyGrib earlier but I can not see that they have become .grb2 stream compatible as yet? It does NOT manage to load ´Current_no_20130724.grb2´ which I just downloaded??

Hmm, you are right. I Was quite shure that zygrib would support .grb2. But I have a couple of leads to other programs for Linux and Windows. Will be back with results. These files are to good to be left unopened :-)

Re: Electronic Tidal Stream Charts for Scotland?

amadeaus..

I have also sent a request to the source of the German grib2 files to let me know which programs can display the grib2 files.

I used them with success earlier.. Let me know what you find out.

Re: Electronic Tidal Stream Charts for Scotland?

amadeus..

You might find this FREE software interesting. It reads both v. 1 and 2 .grib data.
GrADS Software

I tried downloading MaxSea Viewer which is also supposed to be compatible with the .grib2 format but the file was 200 MB,did not want to execute and finally refused to be removed,so I gave up.

I have written to the German provider of stream data asking if they would consider continuing to support the old (present) .grib format for a while longer,to give the more popular navigation programs time to catch up.

Let me know how you are getting on..

Re: Electronic Tidal Stream Charts for Scotland?

Amadeus..

I forgot to mention the excellent Route Optimizing program qtVlm,are you familiar with that? I just spoke to the developers and they are also planning to upgrade to grib2 in one of their next releases. qtVlm is also compatible with OpenCPN as you can copy/paste an optimized route in .gpx format.
