East River Transits

I need help!!!

I want to transit the NY East River and go in the direction of the tide. I find several sites that give info on slack, flood and ebb (usually at Hell's Gate), but they don't explain what that means.

For example (https://www.tides.info/?command=view...York%20Current) tells me that on 9/13 "slack ebb begins" at 4:05 AM. And that Max Ebb is 6:42 AM. What I don't understand is if I am going southbound (Hells Gate to Battery) is the current favorable to me or against me.

I think the basic question is which direction is the current going on any specific date and time.

Thanks for your help!!!

Re: East River Transits

Ebb tide is flowing from Hells Gate towards The Battery, so you want the ebb.

Re: East River Transits

The DIRECTION of ebb and flood are listed in the tables.

That makes it easy... IF you remember to look at them, instead of just assuming that the flood is "upstream" from wherever you are.

The ebb and flood at Hell Gate are NOT the same as for the Hudson.

Don't ask me how I know this.

Re: East River Transits

I second that link as a good resource. When coming from Long Island Sound and bound for the Delaware bay, we aim to reach Throgs Neck around the time of slack water, Ebb Begins. Then, we can usually carry the fair current to Sandy hook.

If your destination is still somewhere in NY harbor, you could enter at Throgs Neck a bit later and carry a stronger current.

Re: East River Transits

You need to purchase and study an
Eldridge Pilot Book
It has all the info you need
In short if going southbound from Long Island Sound
You want to be under the ThrogsNeck Bridge
One Hour Before "Slack before Ebb" at Hell Gate
If you do this you will transit Hell Gate at Slack then ride the
southbound ebb all the way to Sandy Hook
Just did LIS to Cape May
Cruising by the Statue of Liberty is Fantastic
Cheers
