Waterway Guide is good for your first time. As for charts, a book of strip charts will do. You might also want a book with the inlets. The following includes the inlets.
The Intracoastal Waterway Chartbook VA/FL - 5th Ed.

We use and recommend Kettlewell's chartbook as Rick mentioned. We also use the Maptech chartbooks although they are a bit large to use at the helm. In addition we get the NOAA charts for offshore for most inlets we are likely to use. Chuck

the kettlewell book says they have all the major inlets. why the need for noaa charts as well?

edit: I noticed the kettlewell book is only 8.5" X 11". is that beg enough to get the picture?

We currently use richardsons books for the great lakes, much bigger

Not necessarily for details on the inlet. More for details on the offshore depths, hazards and approaches. Many of the chartbooks just don't have enough of this information. Chuck

NOAA is the official source for information at the US coast. So I recommend to consult them at first.
If they do not have sufficient information in their portfolio they will be pleased to advice what to use.

If you contact the Cost Pilot branch pass my best regards to Tom and Holly
