Does Anyone Know of an Android Application Using CM93 charts?
Hi,
I am wondering if there is a reasonably priced software package for Android phones which can use CM93 charts.
I am planning to use that together with a Dell Streak smartphone...
Thanks for your thoughts,
Franzi

Hi Franzi..
I asked Dan some time ago whether OpenCPN would soon be available for Android OS
but I have so far not had any answer from him. As it IS available in Ubuntu/Linux which I believe is in the same family as Android, perhaps it will soon be available in OpenCPN. (OpenCPN runs CM93)

Re: Does anyone know of an Android application using CM93 charts?
I recently used EARTHNC.com charting to make a trip from Tampa, Fl to the Dry Tortugas and back. Admittedly not an intinsically difficult trip navigation wise but a chance to use this Android App in a limited offshore trip. It makes your android phone into a chartplotter. It worked as advertised! While in Cel range of shore all NOAA raster charts are available and you can zoom in or out as your needs dictate and movement from one charted page to the next is seamless. Once out of range the app uses the phone GPS to accurately plot your position on any previously loaded charts you have in storage pretty nifty! Of course I used a regular GPS and paper charts as well but the phone was never wrong . You do have to download the charts for your trip but it is easy enough.. cost me 10.99 a year subsciption for Iphone or android...Good Luck

Go to google apps search Navionics they have maps from most parts of the world under $15 seams ok as a backup but I dont think I would 100% trust it. I wish open CPN would make a android app that would be fantastic.

Re: Does anyone know of an Android application using CM93 charts?
Here is another software application for Android OS smartphones.
Here you will receive real-time AIS targets from around 8000 vessels presently displayed on OpenSeaMap. This is not however, a navigation program but shows detailed vessel info with their course, speed etc.
I also had a look at EarthNC which presently have all the NOAA charts available for Android iPhone/iPad and all Brazilian and New Zealand charts available on other smartphones.
This is a VERY basic navigation oriented utility.
Would be great to have OpenCPN run under Android to properly use these charts and AIS reporting facilities.

Re: Does Anyone Know of an Android Application Using CM93 charts?
Two years on . . . . . is there an Android app for CM93 charts? I have the last updated 2011 CM93 charts covering the whole world and use them on either an Asus Eee PC 1015 10" notebook running Ubuntu or for backup, an Asus Eee PC 900 running Windows XP, both with OpenCPN.
I really would like to use a cheap more portable notepad running Android.

Steve..
You can use the FREE OruxMaps nav. app. with any of your .kap maps through the Oruxmap Desktop converter. I use it on my Samsung 10.1 Tablet.
You can also easily CREATE .kap maps from your CM93 maps using GE2KAP.

Re: Does Anyone Know of an Android Application Using CM93 charts?
From the OpenCPN FAQ:
Quote:
When will OpenCPN be ported to Android?
That is not likely to happen in the near future, if at all. There are some real issues preventing a port. Wxwidgets, which is behind everything you see on OpenCPN, has not been ported to Android. A project to do just that, is in it's infancy. Android is using a Linux kernel but on top of that is a lot Java code while OpenCPN and all the supported operating systems, are coded in C & C++. This means some substantial rewriting of existing code. Another development worth watching, is Ubuntu running on Android hardware which is in the pipeline.
|
As the last line suggests, the most likely way that OpenCPN will appear on tablets is when you see the rollout of Linux flavours for tablets.
[edit] as the above response links to
Me - I'm also running OpenCPN (and the nifty Navigatrix live distro) on a couple of eee's including a venerable if diminutive eee 701 which is the official boat computer. It's fine - I don't need it out in the cockpit and keyboard still blows touch away if you're doing halfway serious stuff.

Re: Does Anyone Know of an Android Application Using CM93 charts?
Hi Tore,
Many thanks for the info. Well, there are 20,000+ charts. LOL. BUT I'm up for it. I'm planning on sailing around the world in a very small boat. If the charts have to be converted one-by-one, I'll do as many as possible before I start . . . . otherwise, I'll have plenty of time at less than 3 knots!
I'll look at it after dinner and make a start by downloading the app.
Thanks again.
I'll keep you informed.
Bye for now
Steve

Your question was not answered by the other posters. And, the answer is yes! You can run OpenCPN on an android tablet in a lot less time than it is going to take to convert a bunch of charts. See my post you may have overlooked in this thread.
You are apparently inclined to put some effort into what you want, which is more than I can say for people posting here who know about this option but who are either too lazy or unwilling to try something different or tell others it's possible.
Do yourself a favour and at least look at the instructions for getting OpenCPN on android devices: Building on Motorola Xoom | Official OpenCPN Homepage

Re: Does Anyone Know of an Android Application Using CM93 charts?
Steve..
I think building anything on Android means ´rooting´your tablet and invalidating the guarantee. The process at the moment also seems very daunting and not easy for most people. If the time comes when it can be installed at the touch of a button, and I can choose between Android or Linux,I´ll have a go.
Using GE2KAP and Google Earth you can also easily create .kap maps in zoomed-in great detail showing all shallows and underground reefs. Truly a great facility for close-ups and when you do not have map coverage.

Until you've given it a go the only thing you can say with authority is your warranty trumps all else. Your emphasis on sharing this concern of yours with others is a disservice to the facts. Nothing done, including rooting a device is irreversable. If your going to pretend to be an authority on this, at least learn enough so you can tell the whole truth.
And just because you find the steps - which are mostly copy and paste - daunting, does not mean everybody will find it daunting.
Best if you keep your opinions to yourself until you've actually tried the installation.

No.
You just build the app and upload it to your device and it works.
No rooting required. No warranties lost.
