I would like to think that most of us can

But to swing the compass correctly, one needs at least two transients near 90 apart.
Start by flying the code flags "OQ", then calculate / adjust the "A" error and follow with the "B & C" errors.

Actually, I have still been carrying one in my shirt pocket for 33 years as a professional pilot. True, it doesn't get used much but I still like to plot fixes and practice basic nav skills during long ocean crossings.
