Degrees, Minutes & Seconds Conversion

I am constantly having to convert lats & longs from degrees, minutes, seconds to degrees, minutes & decimal minutes or just decimal degrees. I am looking for an excel spreadsheet that will handle these conversions both ways. Any ideas? Thanks.

Yes, just make one up. 1/60, 2/60, 3/60...

Re: Degrees, Minutes & Seconds Conversion

Why do you need a spread sheet? just divide by 6 in your head.... 36" = .6' , 40" =.66'
Same when going from minutes to decimal degrees.

Re: Degrees, Minutes & Seconds Conversion

Seems like it should be fairly easy to set up a small spreadsheet with the formulas in Excel. You will need one set of formulas for each input that you want to convert.

If you have an i-device, there seem to be a few converters that do it all on one screen. Here is one for example (not affiliated, just googled it): https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/coor...converter-free

Or change your GPS to degrees-minutes-seconds, enter everything you need to enter, then change back to degrees-minutes-decimal minutes. Everything you enter will be converted perfectly.

Re: Degrees, Minutes & Seconds Conversion

Has everybody really lost the ability to divide numbers under 60 by 6? And to multiply numbers by 6 when going the other way? ...OK that's harder - you have to shift the decimal point or something.

As I recall its the '6 times table' - memorised by rote in about year 4 or so.

Mind you they say that nobody on supermarket checkouts can make change without the help of electronics anymore........ sob

May I ask why?
Can 't you align your data/uses to a single system?

You do mean divide it by 60, don't you? If you divide 36/6 you end up with 6 not .6

I guess so... but I just divide by six and shift the dot thingo to the left automatically...6 into 36 and shift the dot thingo is easier than 60 into 36

Re: Degrees, Minutes & Seconds Conversion

This seems to be an engineer, or wanna be engineer, setting up an EXCEL spreadsheet to convert minutes and seconds like this. Dividing by 6 or multiplying by 6 is good. Hmmm, does he perhaps have a mechanical pencil tucked neatly in a vinyl pocket protector inserted in his short-sleeved dress shirt breast pocket?

Oooops! Divide by 60, not 6, and 'show your work'! Otherwise, you won't see the ways of your errors!

Re: Degrees, Minutes & Seconds Conversion

Mechanical pencils were cool. I had one about 1956 but someone nicked it.
However I did find a 4 colour 'biro' behind the washing machine the other day...probly been there 15 years or so.

Whats rong with doing the simple stuff in your head?

I do lots of stuff in my head... which is a bit of a worry......and a little bit scary
