More succinctly called local knowledge.

Indeed... glad to be electronic as I can just put the 8' offset in and I'm done. The paper chart boys are gonna need a lot of pencil erasers this time!
cheers,
Nick.

I hate to run into a whole nation cause GPS told me it wasn't where it was supposed to be.

I guess, as long as it's sticking out above the water level I'll be OK.

Re: Death to PAPER ! More Nails in the Paper Chart Coffin . . .
There are some dramatic articles about newspapers and how the entire business is imploding. This one image from one of the two articles says it all:
Paper charts, paper guides, and paper sailing directions will all go the same way - there's really no difference. The advantages just aren't there, the costs are too high, and technology provides much better capabilities. In our lifetime or maybe our children's, the only place those nautical aids will show up is in museums showing how boating used to be done. It'll be looked at the way parchment charts are looked at today.

Visual navigation should not be affected. Your GPS set to WGS 84 will need some adjustment.

Not prefectly evenly.
The tsunami wave probably also modified the coastline somewhat.
How much subsidence was there? I have sailed in Turkey, where in you dinghy you can go over the foundations of buildings.
Back to depth sounders and leadlines.
